MINUTES
JULY 7, 1993
The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on
the above date at 6:00 p.m. at the Lynwood Community/ Transit
Center, located at 3798 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided.
OPENING CEREMONIES

Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala,
Commissioner Rasheed Gregory, Commissioner Maylene Hardin,
Commissioner LaChatta Hunter.
Members Not Present:
Commissioner Andre Agaalii, Commissioner Siatua Agaalii,
Commissioner Sulu Ah- Ching, Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner
Sabrinya Green, Commissioner Cameron Green.
Members Excused:
Commissioner Daniel Haley.

Recreation staff member, Diana J. Escalante certified the posting
of the agenda.
Correspondence
Diana Escalante reported Commissioner Daniel Haley is excused from
tonight's meeting due to an illness.
Interim Director of Recreation, Ralph Davis, read the Commission a
thank you letter from Rochelle Chapman, a 1992 Scholarship
recipient.

General Recreation Department
Recreation staff member, Diana J. Escalante updated the Commission
on the following activities:

Anti - Graffiti Day
Interim Director Ralph Davis informed the Commission that the
Department is waiting for the City's annual budget to be approved.
Budgetary constraints are still a concern to the Department. The
Commission may need to seek sponsorships to assist in the funding
of the next Anti - Graffiti Day.
A sub - committee of LaChatta Hunter, Jesus Trigo, Rasheed Gregory,
Cameron Green, and Maylene Hardin was formed to assist with the
planning of the event.
Commissioners Cameron Green and Sabrinya Green arrived at 6:20 p.m.
Approval of Past Minutes
With a quorum present, the minutes were approved. It was moved by
Cameron Green and seconded by Michelle Zavala to approve the
minutes of June 2, 1993. All in agreement. Motion carried.
Youth Service Awards
Interim Director Ralph Davis provided suggestions on the criteria
for the Youth Service Awards.
A sub - committee consisting of LaChatta Hunter, Rasheed Gregory,
Jesus Trigo, and Michelle Zavala was formed for recommendations to
the Commission.
Special Presentation
The Youth Commission presented a proclamation to the members of the
Champion Girls Basketball Team at Lynwood High School.

Commissioner Rasheed Gregory congratulated the Lynwood High School
Girls Basketball Team.

Commissioner Cameron Green congratulated the Lynwood High School
Girls Basketball Team.
Maylene Hardin welcomed new Commissioner LaChatta Hunter.
Commissioner Sabrinya Green congratulated the Lynwood High School
Girls Basketball Team and welcomed La Chatta Hunter to the
Commission.
Adiournment
It was moved by Cameron Green and seconded by Michelle Zavala to
adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on August 4, 1993.
Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:19 p.m.

It was moved by Commissioner C. Green and seconded by Vice
Chairperson Michelle Zavala to approve the minutes of May 5, 1993.
Motion carried.
Correspondence
Commissioner Cameron Green reported Commissioner Andre Agaalii will
not be in attendance at tonight's meeting due to a previous
commitment.
Lynwood High School Girls Basketball Presentation
The Lynwood High School Girls Basketball Presentation will be
postponed until the next meeting.

General Recreation Department
Diana J. Escalante reported on the following upcoming recreation
activities: The City of Lynwood's Juneteenth Celebration is
planned for Saturday, June 19; The annual Fourth of July Firework
Display is schedulelsor Sunday, July 4th at Dust Mervyn Dymally
Park.
Teen Center /Youth Council
Diana J. Escalante reported the Teen Center will sponsor for youth
aged 8 - 18, a Trip to Wild Rivers on Friday, July 8. The Teen
Center has officially implemented a Job Referral Service program.
The Teen Center recently experienced a burglary this past weekend.
The televisions, video games sets, as well as some cash was stolen.
The burglary is currently under investigation by the Sheriff's
Department.

The Commission discussed a quarterly youth awards program. The
names of qualified candidates will be relayed to the Recreation
Department on a routine basis. The awards will be presented at the
commission meetings. The Commission recommended the recipients and
the awards ceremony be noted in a local paper.

Diana Escalante distributed the latest commission phone list and
the City of Lynwood Commission Policy Book.
Commission Orals
Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala inquired if the Recreation
Department can notify the Commission when there are any Commission
openings.
Commissioner Rasheed Gregory recommended the Teen Center sponsor
job training seminars and workshops.
Commissioner Cameron Green recommended the Commissioners receive
commission badges or t- shirts.
Commissioner Joe Araujo requested new commissioner business cards
without the Department's phone number. Recreation Staff member
Diana Escalante explained the department would need to approve such
a purchase.
Chairperson Jesus Trigo requested more information on Teen Center

programs. He also req ested staff to research to possibility of
the Commission scheduling selection interviews for new
commissioners. He also recommended the department develop a flyer
advertising the upcoming Commission meetings.
Adiournment
It was moved by Commissioner Araujo and seconded by Commissioner
Cameron Green to adjourn to the next regular scheduled meeting on
July 7, 1993. Motion carried.

LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF
MAY 12, 1993
The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of
Lynwood was held May 12, 1993 at Conference Room at City Hall.
(The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act.)
Dr. Betty Jackson called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M.
Members in attendance were: Verna Culp, Della Mazziotti, Mary
Sue Lewis, and Dr. Betty Jackson. Ethel Pacheco was excused from
the meeting.
Staff present were Cynthia Green - Geter and Silvia Lara.
Guests in attendance were Tommy Cox, Cathy Green, City Clerk
Andrea Hooper, and Mayor Pro -Tem Evelyn Wells.
Happy Birthday wish goes to Commissioner Verna Culp.
City Clerk Andrea Hooper Conducted Swearing in Ceremonies for New
Commissioner Mary Sue Lewis.
Minutes of March 10 , 1993 and April 14, 1993 were approved as
presented.
I. OLD BUSINESS
Ms. Geter mentioned that the commission needs to revitalize
the "Friends of the Women's Commission ". Ms. Jackson
mentioned that the performance of the Friends of the
Women's Commission is to assist in fund raising and
special project projects.
II. NEW BUSINESS
Ms. Green - Geter mentioned that a date needs to be set for an
all day child care workshop. Three dates were tentatively
given as the possible dates for workshop. Dr. Jackson made
a motion that the Irvine Project booklet serve as reference
for this workshop. Motion was moved by Ms. Mazziotti and
seconded by Ms. Culp. Suggested dates for the all day
workshop wer(a:

b) September 25, 1993, or
c) October 9, 1993.

III. PUBLIC ORALS
* Ms. Mazziotti made a motion that the commission support
"Resolution for Federal Legislation Against Interference
with Abortion Rights ". Motion was second by Commissioner
Culp.
* Dr. Jackson suggested looking into health issues due
to the cut backs of Medicare.
There being no further business, the Lynwood Women's Commission
meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m.

JUNE 9, 1993
The regular meeting of the Women's Commission of the City of
Lynwood was held June 9, 1993 at the Conference Room at City
Hall. (The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown
Act.)
Commissioner Ethel Pacheco called the meeting to order at 5:30
p.m. Members in attendance were: Verna Culp, Della Mazziotti,
and Ethel Pacheco. Mary Sue Lewis and Dr. Betty Jackson were
excused from the meeting.
Staff present was Silvia Lara.
Minutes of May 12, 1993 were tabled for approval at the meeting of
July 14, 1993.
I. OLD BUSINESS
A. WOMEN'S COMMISSION DAY CARE WORKSHOP
Commissioners discussed the date for the Day Care
Center workshop. Ms. Lara contacted Bateman Hall to
check on date availability. Ms. Lara tentatively
reserved Bateman Hall for Friday, November 5, 1993 from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Commissioners mentioned that
they would like to use Coffee Cup as the caterer for
this event.
B. RESOLUTION FOR FEDERAL LEGISLATION AGAINST
WITH ABORTION RIGHTS
Ms. Lara will prepare a resolution for commissioners'
review. Ms. Lars. made necessary corrections and
commissioners' endorsed the resolution. Ms. Lara will
take care of processing the resolution.
II. PUBLIC ORALS
- Commissioners' requested an updated list of the "Friends
of the Lynwood Commission ".
There being no further business, the meeting of the Lynwood
Women's Commission was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
