Adjournment ORAL COMMUNICATION 1 0 CITY OF LYNW60D YOUTH COMMISSION OPENING CEREMONIES The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on Wednesday, April 7, 1993 at 6:05 p.m. at the Lynwood Teen Resource Center, located at 11409 Birch Street. Chairperson Cornecia Banks presided. Roll Call Chairperson Cornecia Banks, Vice Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Commissioner Andre Agaalii, Commissioner Siatua Agaalii, Commisssioner Sulu Ah- Ching, Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner Cameron Green, Commissioner Daniel Haley, and Commissioner Michelle Zavala answered roll call. Commissioner Maylene Hardin, Commissioner Alton Hamilton, and Commissioner Jaime Perez did not answer roll call. Approval of Past Minutes It was moved by Commissioner Cameron Green, and seconded by Commissioner Michelle Zavala to approve the minutes of March 3, 1993. Motion carried. Certification of the Posting of the Agenda Recreation Staff, Diana J. Escalante certified the posting of the agenda, in accordance with the Brown Act. Commissioner Maylene Hardin arrived at 6:20 p.m. Elections A. Chairperson CONSENT ITEMS It was moved by Commissioner Cameron Green and seconded by Commissioner Andre Agaalii to open the election for Chairperson. Motion carried. Commissioner Michelle Zavala nominated Jesus Trigo as Chairperson. Cornecia Banks seconded the nomination Commissioner Cameron Green nominated Joe Araujo as Chairperson. Commissioner Siatua Agaalii seconded the nomination. i 0 11 Commissioner Andre Agaalii motioned to close nominations for Chairperson. Commissioner Cameron Green seconded. Motion carried. A ballot election was conducted. Jesus Trigo and Joe Araujo received 5 votes each. Both candidates were allowed to give 5 minute presentations on their qualifications. A second ballot election was conducted. Jesus Trigo and Joe Araujo received five votes each. A roll call election was held. Roll Call Jesus Trigo: Commissioner Cornecia Banks, Commissioner Sulu Ah- Ching, Commissioner Daniel Haley, Commissioner Maylene Hardin, Commissioner Jesus Trigo, Commissioner Michelle Zavala Joe Araujo: Commissioner Andre Agaalii, Commissioner Siatua Agaalii, Commissioner Joe Araujo, Commissioner Cameron Green. With a vote of 6 to 4, became the Chairperson. B. Vice Chairperson in favor of Jesus Trigo. Jesus Trigo Commissioner Cameron Green motioned to open nominations. Commissioner Siatua Agaalii seconded. Motion carried. Commissioner Daniel Haley nominated Michelle Zavala. Commissioner Jesus Trigo seconded. Commissioner Maylene Hardin nominated Cameron Green. Commissioner Andre Agaalii seconded. Commissioner Jesus Trigo motioned to close nominations. Commissioner Joe Araujo seconded. Motion carried. The results of a ballot election being 6 to 4 in favor of Michelle Zavala. Michelle Zavala became the Vice Chairperson. Recreation Reports Recreation Staff Diana Escalante informed the Commission on the following: A The Annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Saturday, April 10. B. The Recreation Department is selling tickets for Magic Mountain. Facility and Program Supervisor, Perry Brents informed the Commission about the upcoming All City Track Meet scheduled for Saturday, May 1, 1993. He asked for volunteers to help staff the meet. The Teen Center is undergoing some changes. Current Teen Center Staff will be responsible for various aspects of the Teen Center program. He also reminded the Commission about the next upcoming Community Awareness Meeting, scheduled for Thursday, April 15. The topic will be Self Esteem. Mr. Brents encouraged each Commissioner to bring at least 3 of their friends to the event. Ham Park Mural Contest Facility and Program Supervisor, Perry Brents presented the Ham Park Mural Contest to the Commission. He invited them to provide a theme for the new mural. Ideas will be brought to the next Youth Commission Meeting. Youth Summit Evaluation Ms. Escalante presented a favorable Youth Summit Evaluation. Chairperson Jesus Trigo reminded the Commission that the Youth Summit was a their original idea. A discussion ensued as to the merit of the Youth Summit and Youth Commission involvement. Anti - Graffiti Da Ms. Escalante presented the Commission with an idea of a large scale Anti - Graffiti /Clean Up Day. A discussion ensued as to what month this event should occur in. After much discussion, the Commission decided on the month of September. This item will be brought back for discussion at the next regularly scheduled meeting. t • • ORAL COMMUNICATION Public Orals Denise Haley, 3757 Palm, encouraged staff to provide the youth and their parents with an annual agenda of special events. Commission Orals Commissioner Cornecia Banks congratulated Chairperson Jesus Trigo and Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala on the election. She also thanked the Commission for a great year, she had as Chairperson. Commissioner Andre Agaalii congratulated Chairperson Jesus Trigo and Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala on the results of the election. Commissioner Siatua Agaalii congratulated Chairperson Jesus Trigo and Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala on the results of the election. Commissioner Daniel Haley congratulated Chairperson Jesus Trigo and Michelle Zavala on the results of the election. Commissioner Cameron Green encouraged the Commission to evaluate- changing the number of meetings back to twice a month. He also inquired if the Commission could give a proclamation to the Girls Basketball Team. Commissioner Maylene Hardin congratulated Chairperson Jesus Trigo and Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala on the results of the election. Commissioner Sulu Ah -Ching apologized for not attending the last Youth Commission meeting. Commissioner Michelle Zavala apologized for not attending the Youth Summit. Chairperson Jesus Trigo congratulated Michelle Zavala and complimented Cornecia Banks on a job well done as Chairperson. Commissioner Cornecia Banks presented Michelle Zavala with a friendship /get well card from the commission. Staff Orals Ms. Escalante recommended the Youth Commission retake the Commission portrait before the next meeting. All Commissioners are asked to be at the Teen Resource Center at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5. Adjournment P CITY OF LYNWOOD YOUTH COMMISSION May 5, 1992 Minutes OPENING CEREMONIES The City of Lynwood's Youth Commission met in a regular session on the above date at 6:05 p.m. at the Lynwood Teen Resource Center,located at 11409 Birch Street. Chairperson Jesus Trigo presided. Chairperson Jesus Trigo, Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala, Commissioners Joe Araujo, Cameron Green, Sabrinya Green, Rasheed Gregory, Daniel Haley, Alton Hamilton, Maylene Hardin answered roll call. Commissioners Andre Agaalii, Siatua Agaalii, and Sulu Ah -Ching did not answer roll call. Certification of the Posting of the Agenda Recreation staff Member Diana J. Escalante certified the posting of the agenda, in accordance with the Brown Act. Aooroval of Past Minut It was moved by Commissioner C. Green and seconded by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala to approve the minutes of April 7, 1993. Motion carried. Swearing in of Commissioners Andrea Hooper, City Clerk swore in Sabrinya Green and Rasheed Gregory as Youth Commissioners. CONSENT ITEMS Program Reports Interim Recreation Director, Ralph Davis reported: The first edition of the Recreation Department's brochure was mailed to all the residents of the city. The annual youth baseball program is in full swing. The Recreation Department will host the Southeast Municipal Athletic Association Track Meet on Saturday, May 15 at Lynwood High School. The City of Lynwood will celebrate Juneteenth day on Saturday, June 19. Teen Center - no report Ham Park Mural Contest The Commissioners provided various suggestions for the theme. It was moved by Commissioner Araujo, seconded by Commissioner Gregory to approve the theme "The Youth - our Future." Motion carried. Anti - Graffiti Day The Commission decided on Saturday, September 18, 1993 as the date of the next Anti - Graffiti Day. Commissioner Cameron Green suggested planning the event on a main street. Chairperson Jesus Trigo recommended using Dymally Park as the main site. Number of Meetings a Month Ms. Escalante reported the Department's recommendation is to remain scheduling one regular meeting per month. A sub - committee should be formed, if there is a need for a second meeting. Discussion ensued. It was moved by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala and seconded by Commissioner Green approve the recommendation. Motion carried. Youth Service Awards Ms. Escalante reminded the Commission about their past annual awards program. She recommended the Commission develop an annual, quarterly, or monthly youth service award program. Criteria may be developed on scholastic ability, community involvement, etc. The Commissioners will bring ideas back to the next regularly scheduled meeting. Commission Picture Chairperson Jesus Trigo recommended the Commission reschedule their Commission picture before their next meeting. Commissioner Araujo suggested the picture be taken in the City Council Chamber or in font of City Hall. It was moved by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala and seconded by Commissioner Araujo to approve both recommendations. Motion carried. ORAL COMMUNICATION Public Orals Izre Ta Staff Orals Ms. Escalante distribute an updated Commissioners roster. Each Commissioner was asked to review it and make and necessary corrections. A master list will be distributed at the next Youth Commission meeting. Commission Orals Commissioner Joe Araujo suggested the department research the possibility of purchasing hats, t- shirts etc. with the Youth Commission logo. These items will be worn at special events and bring notoriety to the Commission. He also congratulated the Rasheed Gregory and Sabrinya Green on their appointment as Commissioners. Commissioner Cameron Green congratulated Sabrinya Green and Rasheed Gregory on their recent appointment to the Commission. He also suggested the Commission honor the Lynwood High School Girls Basketball Team on their recent victory at the State Championships. Commissioner Rasheed Gregory inquired if the community is invited to participate in Anti - Graffiti Day. Ms. Escalante replied yes. Commissioner Alton Hamilton III apologized for being absent at the last meeting. Commissioner Daniel Haley congratulated Sabrinya Green and Rasheed Gregory on their recent appointment to the Commission. Commissioner Maylene Hardin congratulated Sabrinya Green and Rasheed Gregory on their recent appointment to the Commission. Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala congratulated Sabrinya Green and Rasheed Gregory on their recent appointment to the Commission. Chairperson Jesus Trigo recommended the Commission moved their meetings from the Teen Center to the Community/ Transit Center. Conducting the meetings from the community/ Transit Center will provide the Commission with more visibility. All commissioners were in agreement. The meetings will be moved to the new location, beginning Wednesday, June 2, 1993. Adjournment It was moved by Vice Chairperson Michelle Zavala and seconded by Commissioner Joe Araujo to adjourn to the next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, June 2, 1993. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:01 p.m.
