CALL TO ORDER - Chairperson Katherine Amey called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. b. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE -The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chairperson Amey c. ROLL CALL - Chairperson Amey - Present Commissioner Amicone - Present Commissioner Garcia - Present Commissioner Edner -- Present Vice Chairperson Lopez - Present Commissioner Marion - Present Commissioner Uribe - Present d. CERTIFICATION OF AGENDA POSTING -The agenda was duly posted for the November meeting, as prescribed by the Brown Act e. APPROVAL OF PAST MINUTES -Commissioner Amey calls for a motion on the September and October minutes. Commissioner Adolph Lopez motions that the minutes be approved. Chairperson Irene Marion seconds the motion. All commissioners vote in favor of approving the minutes as written and the motion is carried. INFORMATION ITEMS - a. City Council Items -There will bean Inauguration Ceremony for two new City Council Members and three LUSD Members at Bateman Hall on 12/2/03 at 6:00 p.m. b. General City Program Report - • Rozie Carrillo, Recreation Superintendent Il made the following announcement: The Salvation Army, Nix Check Cashing and the City of Lynwood will hold a Thanksgiving Food Give -away in Athens Park in Los Angeles. Fifty pre - selected participants from Compton and fifty participants from Lynwood will receive a $75 gift certificate and a bag of groceries. There will be entertainment for the children attending the event. Ms. Carrillo will attempt to get some media coverage of the event. • Phyllis Cooper- Lyons, Recreation Superintendent II made the following announcement: Ms. Lyons invited the Community Affairs Commission to fill out an application for inclusion in the Christmas Parade line -up. The parade will be held on 12/5/03 beginning with a dignitary reception at Bateman Hall at 5.45 p.m., the parade is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Atlantic and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. This year's theme is "A Salute to Lynwood Businesses" c. Senior Citizens Program Report - Upcoming events include the following activities: • "We Care" Senior Food Net at CTC on 11/26/03 - 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. • 5t^ Annual Turkey Strut at the CTC on 11/26/03 - 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. • Tamale Festival, Indio, CA on 12/6/03 - 8:30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. • Christmas Yuletide Social at the CTC on 12/17/03 - 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. • "Christmas in the Pines ", Lake Arrowhead, CA on 12/19/03 - 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. • "Below the Border" Lobster Lunch, Baja Coast and Tijuana, Mexico on 2/14/04 d. Library Report - Librarian not present e. H.R.M.A.C. Report -The H.R.M.A.C. forum scheduled for November was held despite the hail /thunderstorm on that night; unfortunately attendance was not very good. The Commissioners also discussed their varying opinions on the movie "Two Towns in Jasper" H.R.M.A.C. was pleased at the participation of the Community Affairs Commission in viewing and reporting on the movie's subject matter of racial hate crimes. SCHEDULED MATTERS - a. Goals and Objectives -Tabled until next meeting. IV PUBLIC ORALS - Please adhere to the three - minute time limit. Three young gentlemen from Lynwood High School came by to ask for help in obtaining Basketball uniforms. They were selling scratch cards featuring coupons ranging from $.50 to $3.00 off of local restaurant meals. They stated that they needed to get their uniforms by that Friday or they couldn't play Several of the Commissioners donated money to the youth. The Commissioners voiced their concerns that the City is helping youth in our Sister City in Mexico, while our own Lynwood residents are going without things they need for school activities. V COMMISSION ORALS - Please adhere to the three - minute time limit. • Chairperson Amey - Discussed that she and Vice Chairperson Marion went to a meeting regarding tourism in the City of Lynwood. Chairperson Amey stated that Lynwood youth need activities to participate in. A movie theatre is needed in Lynwood as well as more cultural activities including ballets, plays, operas, etc. New City Council should be held accountable for their campaign promises. Commissioner Amey read a thank you card from former Recreation Superintendent Dorothy Siddell. • Commissioner Amicone - Inquired as to City staff attending trip to Talpa, Mexico. Stated that the City's priorities are out of line. • Commissioner Lopez - Invited Commissioners to a 5 K Walkathon on 11/22 at the Pike in Long Beach; the cause is to fight racism and bigotry • Commissioner Garcia - No comment • Commissioner Uribe -Stated that she is looking forward to the Christmas parade. Commented on the good health of her three -month old baby Inquired about obtaining a jacket like other Commissioners have received. • Commissioner Edner - Glad to be here and is keeping busy She is looking forward to Senior activities. Asked if Commissioners were going to receive a copy of a proclamation that she accepted on behalf of the Community Affairs Commission at one of the October City Council Meetings. Stated that the Community Affairs Commission should attend Council meetings together • Vice Chairperson Marion - Made additional comments on the movie "Two Towns in Jasper" Inquired as to why interviews in the movie were conducted by and with people of the same race. VI.
