HomeMy Public PortalAbout20071114 - Resolution - Board of Directors (BOD) Cover Sheet for Scanning by ECS Orieinatine Department General Manager laserfiche Template Board of Directors Template Fields Document Date: 11/14/2007 Document Type: Resolution Preserve Name: Keywords(no more than 4): Marin County Parks 35th Anniversary Project Name: Project Number: Vendor or Other Party: Name (First): Name(Last): Address: APN Number: Document No, 07-26 Additional Field: Additional Field: Additional Field: Additional Field: RESOLUTION NO. 07-26 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE MIDPENINSULA REGIONAL OPEN SPACE DISTRICT HONORING THE MARIN COUNTY OPEN SPACE DISTRICT UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS 35 TH ANNIVERSARY WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District thoughtfully recognizes that through the combined efforts of all open space and park districts, state and county park agencies, and non-profit open space protection organizations in the greater Bay Area, a significant positive effect on open space preservation is being achieved; and WHEREAS, in a mirror effort to the District's own sweep into being in 1972, the Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD) was formed this same year by vote of the people of Marin, with a mission to enhance the quality of life in the County through acquisition, protection, and responsible stewardship of ridgelands, baylands, and environmentally sensitive lands; and WHEREAS, after 35 years, MCOSD continues to successfully carry out its mission, having preserved over 15,000 acres of outstanding examples of northern California environments, including oak- bay woodlands, savanna, grasslands, and salt marsh, across 33 open space preserves; and WHEREAS, these habitats are expertly managed by MCOSD to protect and enhance their natural, undeveloped character while promoting educational activities and providing a beautiful place to hike, run, ride, and play; and WHEREAS, among its significant accomplishments during its impressive 35-year history, the MCOSD has established volunteer programs such as Trail Watch and Mounted Patrol, which offers extra eyes and ears on the preserves, the Environmental Stewardship Program that provides opportunities for volunteers to adopt an area, trail, archaeological feature to protect or restore, and the Peripatetic Environmental Preserve Stewards who are dedicated to learning about and eradicating invasive plants; and WHEREAS, MCOSD's commitment to environmental protection and open space preservation is highlighted by its special project to manage a healthy ecosystem at Bolinas Lagoon, a 1,100-acre shallow tidal estuary on California's coast designated as a Wetland of International Importance, which provides critical habitats for hundreds of resident and migratory bird species as well as marine mammals, fish, and invertebrates; and WHEREAS, MCOSD's implementation of the Management Plan for 497-acre Cascade Canyon and adjacent 390-acre White Hill Open Space Preserves exemplifies its mission to preserve and enhance the native plant and animal communities, geologic, hydrologic, and historic resources, while maintaining and enhancing opportunities for public recreation, education, and aesthetic enjoyment of these areas. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Re ional Open Space District does hereby honor and recognize the Marin County Open Space District, its 9 Board of Directors, and its constituents on the momentous occasion of its 35 th anniversary, commends and applauds the MCOSD for its long-standing commitment and dedication to open space and to the community, and offers sincere wishes for its continued success,health, and growth.
