A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF THE MIDPENINSULA REGIONAL OPEN SPACE DISTRICT
HONORING THE MARIN COUNTY OPEN SPACE DISTRICT
UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS 35 TH ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District
thoughtfully recognizes that through the combined efforts of all open space and park districts, state and
county park agencies, and non-profit open space protection organizations in the greater Bay Area, a
significant positive effect on open space preservation is being achieved; and
WHEREAS, in a mirror effort to the District's own sweep into being in 1972, the Marin County
Open Space District (MCOSD) was formed this same year by vote of the people of Marin, with a mission
to enhance the quality of life in the County through acquisition, protection, and responsible stewardship of
ridgelands, baylands, and environmentally sensitive lands; and
WHEREAS, after 35 years, MCOSD continues to successfully carry out its mission, having
preserved over 15,000 acres of outstanding examples of northern California environments, including oak-
bay woodlands, savanna, grasslands, and salt marsh, across 33 open space preserves; and
WHEREAS, these habitats are expertly managed by MCOSD to protect and enhance their natural,
undeveloped character while promoting educational activities and providing a beautiful place to hike, run,
ride, and play; and
WHEREAS, among its significant accomplishments during its impressive 35-year history, the
MCOSD has established volunteer programs such as Trail Watch and Mounted Patrol, which offers extra
eyes and ears on the preserves, the Environmental Stewardship Program that provides opportunities for
volunteers to adopt an area, trail, archaeological feature to protect or restore, and the Peripatetic
Environmental Preserve Stewards who are dedicated to learning about and eradicating invasive plants;
and
WHEREAS, MCOSD's commitment to environmental protection and open space preservation is
highlighted by its special project to manage a healthy ecosystem at Bolinas Lagoon, a 1,100-acre shallow
tidal estuary on California's coast designated as a Wetland of International Importance, which provides
critical habitats for hundreds of resident and migratory bird species as well as marine mammals, fish, and
invertebrates; and
WHEREAS, MCOSD's implementation of the Management Plan for 497-acre Cascade Canyon
and adjacent 390-acre White Hill Open Space Preserves exemplifies its mission to preserve and enhance
the native plant and animal communities, geologic, hydrologic, and historic resources, while maintaining
and enhancing opportunities for public recreation, education, and aesthetic enjoyment of these areas.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula
Re ional Open Space District does hereby honor and recognize the Marin County Open Space District, its
