RESOLUTION NO. 07-27
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF THE MIDPENINSULA REGIONAL OPEN SPACE DISTRICT
HONORING THE MONTEREY PENINSULA REGIONAL PARK DISTRICT
UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS 35Tn ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District graciously
acknowledges that it takes the coordinated work of many open space districts, state and local agencies, and
organizations in multiple jurisdictions to make a long-term, positive impact on the preservation of open
space lands in the greater Bay Area; and
WHEREAS, concurrent with the District's own formation in 1972, the people of Monterey County
approved Measure A, which created the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD) with a charter
to acquire lands for the express purpose of preserving open space and providing recreational opportunity, and
protecting as much of the Monterey Peninsula's natural beauty as possible for future generations; and
WHEREAS, since that time, the MPRPD has been triumphant in carrying out its mission to acquire
open space, provide public use, and encourage community involvement, and has protected 20,000 acres
across a total of 24 parks and open spaces within its 500-square-mile boundary; and
WHEREAS, residents and visitors alike benefit from the natural beauty of the region's ecologically
diverse native landscapes, including undeveloped coastal dunes and wetlands, rocky shoreline, redwood
canyons, Monterey pine terraces, and mixed hardwood flood plains; and
WHEREAS, during its successful 35-year tenure, the MPRPD has achieved many accomplishments,
including collaborating with the Big Sur Land Trust to obtain a $3.4 million grant for "Moo Land"
conservation and trail development on the 10,000-acre Palo Corona Regional Park, opening Palo Corona and
Mill Creek Redwood Preserve to permitted public access, negotiating the purchase of the 17-acre
"Calabrese" coastal property in Sand City, establishing new collaborative partnerships with the Cities of
Marina and Seaside and the Lyceum of Monterey County for environmental education programs; and
WHEREAS, MPRPD's commitment to environmental protection is a significant element of its
mission and is further exemplified in its new "Mission Green," which embraces sustainability and promotes
"green" practices, and has aided MPRPD in becoming more green by purchasing and using environmentally
sensitive products such as recycled paper, fluorescent light bulbs, and other energy saving products and
practices; and
WHEREAS, MPRPD's commendable conservation ethic is further imparted in its message to those
who enjoy and benefit from the spectacular natural beauty of the Monterey Peninsula — "walk softly, take
only memories and leave only footprints;"
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula
Regional Open Space District does hereby honor and extend its sincere congratulations to the Monterey
Peninsula Regional Park District on the occasion of its 351h anniversary, and applauds its continuing and
tireless efforts in fostering in its constituents the same passion of the those who participated in the District's
grassroots formation, and its dedication and commitment to the fundamental ideas of open space preservation
as a key means of maintaining and improving the quality of life for the region's residents and visitors.
