RECREATION AND PARKS C01 MEETING OF JAINARY 23, 1968,
1. Meeting called to order by Chairman E.L, Morris at 7:30 YK in the Council
Chambers of the Lynwood City Hall.
2. Pledge of Allegiance led by Harold Mattoon.

3. ROLL CALL. PRESENT: Commissioner Henry Liewer Commissioner Robert Houtz,
Chairman s.L. Morris. E,YCUSL+DB Commissioner Tom Bancroft and Commissioner P.'L.
Bruner.
4. There being no corrections in the Minutes of the December 26, 1967 meeting
the Minutes were approved as mailed. -
Mr. Snavely introduced Mrs.. Harn one of the Directors of the Diplomats Drum'
and Bugle Corps. She presented the Commissioners with a detailed program of events
the Corps will be participating in the balance of the year. She introduced Miss
Kathy Kinney, Color Guard Captain, and non Rounds, Acting Drum Major for the Corps.
They presented the Corranission with six trophies the Corps has received since being
under the sponsorship of the City of Lynwood. These trophies will be displayed at
the Recreation and Parks Department. Photographs were taken of the two Corps repre-
sentatives and the Commissioners.
5. CORR?SPONDTNCE:
A. Mr. Snavely read a letter front the Janie P. Abbott P.T.A. requesting
waiver of fees for the use of a meeting.room at Ham Park for their
monthly Board meetings,.'
MOTION: By Commissioner Liewer and seconded b} Chairman Morris to
deny the waiver of fee for the use of a room at Ham Park for the Janie
P. Abbott P.T.A:. The Director to write a letter.explaining the rea-
sons for the denial of their request. Motion unanimously approved.
B. Mr. Snavely read a letter from the Disabled American Veterans requesting
a waiver of fee for the use of Bateman Hall for their Americanism Pro-
gram -to be held February 29th. This Program is for all children in
Lynwood."
MOTION: By'Commissioner Liewer and.seconded by Commissioner Houtz to
again grant a waiver of fee to the D.A.V. for Bateman Hall for their
Americanism Day Program on February 29th, Motion carried.
C. Mr. Snavely read a letter from the City Chairman of the March of Dimes
requesting waiver of fee for the use of a room at the Corumrnity Center
cii February lst for the conclusion of the Mothers Drive.
hOTION: By Commissioner Houtz and seconded by Commissioner Liewer to
grant a waiver of fee to the March of. Dimes Committee for the use of a
room at the Community Center the evening of February 1st. Motion carried.
6. REPORTS:
A. The News Releases and Building Activity Reports were reviewed.
8. �DEPARTiiENTAL REPORTS:
A. Mr. Mattoon reported on current Recreation Programs. He informed the
Commission that Mrs. Rabens and Mrs. I {elvin had been given Certificates
of Appreciation at the last meeting of the Coordinating Council for
their contributions and efforts with the Lynwood Children's Theatre
Program
Mr. Mattoon reported that all Basketball Leagues are now starting- -
boys, girls, adult church league and slo -dawn league.
Pre - School classes are being conducted at both Ham Park and the Commu=
nity Center: Baton Classes are continuing at full-capacity classes,
also ballet. Lyn*obd had 29 runners in'the Cross•Country.Meet who
will enter the finals at the S.C.M.A.F. Meet in Fountain Valley on
January 27th. The Swim Programs have resumed at the Natatorium since
reopening January 15th. Future programs include "The Red Shoes" by
the Children's Theatre, "The Man" by the Community Theatre Group, a
Junior Miss Charm Class and a Snow Trip to be 'taken February 22nd.
B. Mr. Mattoon reported that the Park Department had planted grass at :the
Community Center, sprayed the Fernwood Right -of -way for weeds, repaired
the spring on the Space Capsule in the play area, trimmed trees on
Birch Av., cleaned out the sewer line and drinking fountains in City
Park, and completed numerous repair jobs at the ball diamonds and
picnic areas.
At Bateman Hall two broken light fixtures were replaced, effluorescent
stains on the bricks were removed and the plaster walls patched where
needed. •
At the 'Community Center the Foyer remodeling was completed; the Marquee
was washed; ceiling tiles were replaced where stained or missing; ^
light fixtures were repaired; the check -out stand; billiard room and
lounge were cleaned.

Mr., Snavely 'reported that the Natatorium had reopened January 15th.'
Roth new filters have been installed and the water is in fine condition.
All the pipes in the filter room were painted - during the maintenance
period; the ceilings patched where needed and new panic hardware
is being installed on the patio.
D. Mr. Snavely reported that the problem in the Senior Citizen Club has
been resolved. All Club activities are doing very well.
E. Mr. Snavely reported that owner of the property at Gertrude and
Lugo had not paid the delinquent taxes on the property, so the City
Council instructed the City to proceed with the purchase of the pro-
perty. When this is, completed, plans for developing a park on the
property will be investigated.. Mr..Snavely plans to survey the
neighbors to see what their interests are in a proposed park develop-
ment at the site.
F. Mr. Snavely reported`on Capital Projects completed since July 1, 1967.
During this period, the draperies on the stage at Bateman Hall were
cleaned and repaired; a new microphone and stand was purchased for
Bateman Hall; new filters and hardware were purchased for the Nata-
torium; the Park Department fencing placed on the Shuffleboard
Courts; -six new pieces of playground equipment have been ordered for
the City Park Kiddie Korral; all the.materials for remodeling the
Lobby at the Community Center were a Capital expenditure; a new chair
was purchased for the Recreation Secretary; a station wagon was pur-
chased for the Director of Recreation and Parks, and new kitchen units
for the Art House. Three items to be purchased soon include panic
hardware for the Community Center, 23 yds. of brick dust and clay for
the balldiamonds and twenty new tables for the Community Center.

on Flower St., State Street and Los Flores,

the meeting adjourned at 9:05 PM,
