Although this winter may seem extra cold and dreary with COVID-19 still about, there is warmth and fun happening via Zoom at the Watertown Senior Center and we encourage you to join us! In addition to our usual daily exercise offerings, we will be hosting a Valentine Grab-n- Go event with lunch by Maria's. We will also be offering love songs with John Clark, a new weight management class with Pearl Pressman, and virtual museum trips. We also have received a donation of Books -on -Tape from the Watertown Free Public Library for our own lending. Please call Margie at the Senior Center if you would like to know what titles we have available. Many of you have asked about the AARP Tax Program. The volunteers will not be returning to our Senior Center this season due to their concerns about the Coronavirus. I encourage you to call one of our neighboring Senior Centers (Belmont, Newton, Weston or Waltham) to ascertain if they will be offering the program and if so, to obtain assistance from their AARP volunteers. As for the COVID-19 vaccine, please check back with us, the Health Department, your local pharmacy or your doctor, as distribution information is still forthcoming. Know that the Senior Shuttle Bus is available to get you to the grocery store. See inside for details about special shopping destinations. I also encourage all of you to reach out to our Case Worker, Jenya, for application help for SNAP (Food Stamps), MassHealth, Fuel Assistance, Medicare, and housing. As always, the Watertown Food Pantry is open Tuesdays from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at 80 Mount Auburn Street. Food donations also can be dropped off at that time, and monetary donations can be made payable to the Watertown Food Pantry and mailed to the Senior Center. Please continue to remain safe by wearing your masks, washing your hands, and keeping your distance from others. We're all in this together! Thank you for your cooperation. With thanks to all of you for your updates, and kind words of support and encouragement. You make our hearts happy! Zoom Book Club Wednesday, February 10, at 9.- 30 am e will be discussing THE DUTCH HOUSE, by Ann Patchett. At the end of World War II, Cyril Conroy bought the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril's son Danny, as he and his older sister, Maeve, are exiled by their stepmother from the house where they grew up. It is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past, which brings them always back to the house, even if they merely sit in a car and look at it. WATERTOWN SENIOR NEWS • 617 972 6490 • February Watertown ,Senior Center Community Voices Humans need connection: we are not built to thrive in isolation by Carole Smith Berney This quote spoke to me of a challenge the pandemic has of- fered us. How to connect in the COVID era? Besides all the Zooming with Senior Center programs and conversing on the phone with a friend or family member, why not get outside and connect with the natural world? A short walk around your neighborhood can lead to con- nections: with neighbors, dog walkers, parents, children, and babies in strollers, as well as with birds --in winter we still see robins, sparrows, starlings, blue jays, hawks, cardinals and mockingbird$_ Let yourself witness such wildlife nearby; learn to appreciate furry creatures like rabbits and squirrels. I tend to connect with these by speaking softly ("Hi bunny —you're beautiful!") or firmly ("Hello squir- rel —keep away from that birdseed!"). Enjoy the open skies, more visible now that leaves have mostly fallen. Pay attention to the architecture of trees, as well as the lovely and dramatic cloud formations above you. Aside from your own neighborhood, nature places in Watertown that can offer beauty and M peacefulness include Mt. Auburn Cemetery, the Charles River pathway by the Watertown Dam or along the Charles River Rd., and Saltonstall Park, where you can walk through an amazing grove of large white pine trees by the side of the Boys and Girls Club. Why not allow yourself a a' twenty minute walk regularly, bundled up and masked, of course, to connect with the world outside our doors? Benefits include: exercise for creaky joints ("motion is lotion'), a somewhat i meditative calming of the mind, the release of endorphins that improve emotional health, an ultimately an important connection with the natural world! Who Knew Multi -Tasking Could Be Fun by Susan Fish Jehn luny of you, the last many months have foetid me at home. morning I tryto "find" somethingto do outside of the routinesthat have established. I checked out the Senior Center newsletter and I saw line ng. Nowv I admit I've never been a fan. Dancing in a line at weddings just tappeal. Being a Baby Boomer, I'd rather dance to the Oldies (we all the B{ls and 70s had the best music!). I've enjoyed taking a few Ballroom wing classes, so I figured why not try line dancing. I have rhythm and don't trip over my own feet — how hard can it be. Well, it is fun but the experience has different layers. The multi -tasking takes place because you are exercising your body BUT at the same time you are also exercising your brain. I must admit I was surprised I didn't easily remember the sequence of steps at first — not like the old days! Who knew the arms and legs might not be in sync — not like the old days! And that nay lassoing as I moved forward had much to be desired — not like the old days! HOWEVER, I enjoyed the music and moving to the beat, realized this is fun and that I would catch on! I never thought one of the "brain" games we are encouraged to try would be line dancing.* It really does check off the box to try something new. Who knows, you might learn to lasso! *Full disclosure: I took the class in the fall when it first was offered. I haven't able to participate for a bit, but by the time you read this, I will have begun again! PAGE 6 • WATERTOWN SENIOR NEWS New!
