RESOLUTION NO. 08-23
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF THE MIDPENINSULA REGIONAL OPEN SPACE
DISTRICT TO OPPOSE PROPOSITION 98 AND SUPPORT
PROPOSITION 99 ON THE JUNE 2008 CALIFORNIA BALLOT
WHEREAS, On June 3, 2008 voters will be asked to decide on Proposition 98, sometimes
referred to as the California Property Owners and Farmland Protection Act; and
WHEREAS, Proposition 98 could threaten water quality and supply because it could prohibit the
acquisition of land and water through eminent domain to develop public water projects -
threatening many future water projects intended to preserve clean drinking water, protect existing
water resources, and secure additional water supply; and
WHEREAS, the true purpose of Proposition 98 seems to be abolishing rent control in California;
and
WHEREAS, Proposition 98 would also hurt the environment and stop regulations that protect
neighborhoods by prohibiting laws that protect our land, air, water and laws that protect our
neighborhoods and home values; and
WHEREAS, If passed, Proposition 98 could prohibit important environmental protections,
including regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, laws to limit climate change, and other
growth control measures intended to stop sprawl, check uncontrolled development, and to protect
open space;
WHEREAS, voters who want real eminent domain reform should vote for Proposition 99 - The
Homeowners Protection Act—which will prohibit the government from using eminent domain to
take a home and transfer it to a private developer.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Midpeninsula
Regional Open Space District opposes Proposition 98 and supports Proposition 99.
