CEOs contacted the property owner and reminded them of the ordinance prohibiting the vehicle from displaying signs in the evenings. CEOs issued a verbal warning and will coordinate with patrol officers to ensure the signage is not visible after hours. Code Officers patrolling the gated community on a Sunday discovered a commercial delivery at a property on Camden Drive. CEOs made contact with the homeowners and reminded them of the restrictions on Sundays and holidays. Since the items were already delivered, CEOs issued the homeowner a written code violation warning. Code Enforcement assisted the Building Department by issuing a code violation notice to a beachside condominium. Inspections by the Building Department revealed work was started without the necessary permits. Code Enforcement met with representatives of a beachside condominium to discuss short-term rentals possibly violating Village Codes. The building staff will gather all corroborating documentation and present to the Code Officer. Code Enforcement will meet with building staff to determine if any violations occurred. Crim inal Invest ig at ions The Criminal Investigations Division (CID)is actively investigating a fraud offense that occurred in August 2020. An elderly male fell victim to the “injured persons” scam. The suspects told him his granddaughter was injured in an accident and asked for cash so they could help his granddaughter. The victim surrendered $28,000 in cash. Investigators viewed several thousand images from license plate readers in Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles, Miami Beach, Bay Harbour Islands, and cities north to Hallandale Beach. Two vehicles matched the description used by the suspects. CID will continue their follow-up investigation. The CID continues its investigation of a fraud that occurred at a retailer in the Bal Harbour Shops. The suspects used fraudulent accounts to purchase over $10,000 in merchandise. The items were shipped to an address at the Patrick Air Force base in Melbourne, Florida. Detectives are working with Air Force investigators to determine when and where the items were delivered. BHPD Weekly Report Week #39 October 2, 2020 Page 5 Summary of Noteworthy Calls for Service Completed by: Raleigh Flowers, Jr., Chief of Police Date: October 2, 2020 09 -25 -202 0 Thef t 9700 Collins Avenue An unknown male subject entered the Ermenegildo Zegna store and began perusing the merchandise on display. The male retrieved several items from a display and exited the store without paying. The incident was captured on store CCTV; however, the footage was not immediately available and will be forwarded to the police department on a later date. 09 -26 -202 0 M archm an Act 10190 Collins Avenue While conducting an area check, officers observed a female walking in the roadway in front of vehicular traffic. Upon speaking with the female, she exhibited extreme mood swings and continuously uttered profanities and threats. The female also appeared to be intoxicated, she exhibited trouble standing and an unsteady gait. Due to her substance abuse impairment or mental illness, she was transported to Aventura Hospital for further treatment and evaluation. 09 -27 -202 0 Thef t 9700 Coll ins Avenue Four suspects, three males and one female, enter the ADDICT store in the Bal Harbour Shops. The males engaged the store associate in conversation while the female concealed merchandise and exited the store without paying. The theft was not discovered until several hours later and officers responded to document the incident. This case has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division for follow-up. 09/30/20 20 Assist Cit izen 96 00 Block and Hard p ack An elderly male became disoriented and drove his vehicle on the beach sand. The vehicle was towed and the male was transported home to his family. No injuries or property damage were reported. 09/30/20 20 Assist Cit izen / Bak er Act 9800 Block of Collins Avenue While on routine patrol, a Bal Harbour officer found a male who was experiencing a suicidal crises situation. As a precaution, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was summoned and performed a medical evaluation. The male was subsequently Baker Acted and transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
