Millsites Committee Minutes
January 14, 2020
Present : Doug Erickson , Faythe Ellis, Peter Ogozalek, Peggy Erickson , Emily Sumner, Roger O' Day
• Meeting called to order at 6 : 04pm by Doug Erickson
• Treasurer' s Report : Annual budget of $ 1 , 375 . 09 . $ 750 goes to the miller, that leaves 625 . 09 to
work with . 22 , 398 . 44 was received in gifts and donations .
• Sign project update and presentation regarding Expedition Blue : Doug gave an update on the
Expedition Blue project, which is not a good fit for the mill site . Faythe and Doug met on
Thursday to discuss updating the signs designed by Malcolm Wells which have outdated
graphics . They reached out to Steve Vaughn and the Cape Cod Tech school . He has not heard
back from the Tech School yet .
• Retaining Wall Project update : Doug gave an update on the retaining wall project . He stated
that the wall seems to be bulging but that they are working on the project .
• Approval of minutes from 2/12/19 : Faythe Ellis motioned to approve minutes, Roger O' Day
seconded with an edit on page 2 to change treasurer to secretary . 5 - yes, 0- no, 1- abstention
• 2020 SPOOM visit : Doug gave and update on the SPOOM ( Society for Preservation of Old Mills )
visit . They are planning to come to Brewster Grist Mill Wednesday September 30th . There is
expected to be 30-40 people in attendance . It is being requested that the porta -john remain on
site through the 30th . We will have museum and mill open for them . Faythe was concerned with
rain , and if we needed to , we would have a pop- up tent on site . Roger recommended notifying
the Cape Codder of their visit and also recommended giving them ground cornmeal . Faythe
recommended that we notify the Select Board of their visit at a July or August meeting .
• Committee tribute to Dana Condit : Dana passed away and everyone will be in attendance at his
family memorial . Faythe stated that the daffodils and the herring run were close to Dana ' s heart
and it would be great the revamp them along the wall in honor of him or we could plant a Shad
Bush with a sign that says "When the Shad Bush blooms, the herring run ."
• Removal of greenery from parking area wall : Doug would like to remove the greenery from the
wall when we have volunteers or we could see if the DPW could help . The rocks would have to
be removed and then we could repair wall once greenery is removed . Roger recommended
either numbers rocks or taking a picture of the wall prior to work so that we know where to put
stones back .
• Summer schedule : Draft schedule would go from June 27th- August 29th, 10 weeks . Brewster in
Bloom is May 2nd and Faythe is trying to get the museum open for it . Peggy and Emily offered to
help get the museum ready for visitors . The third -grade class usually comes sometime in June,
however at this time we do not have a date . Faythe would like to do outreach for the cornbread
festival which will be August 29th . WMVY interviewed Dana and Faythe last year and they had a
huge turnout for the event .
• Announcements : None
• Items the Chair could not reasonably have anticipated : Doug would like halogen lights replaced
with LED lights . Doug would also like to reshingle the south side of the Mill in the future and he
stated that Andy Shrake would like to clean roof with Borax . Faythe stated that the fan does not
work in the museum . Doug also has a bill for the door but would like to delay payment until it
gets painted .
Faythe said that she would reach out to Susan Broderick to make sure the Millsites is still listed
as a work option for the tax abatement program . Peggy offered to put notice at the high school
to see if we could get volunteers that way as well .
• Motion or adjourn : Roger motioned to adjourn , Faythe seconded . Meeting adjourned at
6 : 35pm .
