Sewer Line Cleaning
Information Form
As voted by the Town Council 14 April 2009,
the Department of Public Works shall charge $100 for clearing blocked sewer services.
Charges will appear on the water bill for the property.
Sewer blockages are costly, unsanitary, and unnecessary! You can prevent sewer line
blockages by following some fairly simple steps.
Sink, Tub and Shower Drains
• These drains are meant for liquids only.
• Make sure that all drains have strainers, baskets or other devices that catch and filter out
solids.
• Clean hair from drains in showers, bathtubs and bathroom.
• Fats, oils and greases are especially bad for drains. Place fats, oils and greases in a sealed
container and place it in the trash.
Toilets
Toilets are made for disposal of bodily wastes and toilet tissue. In addition to the restrictions on
drains listed above, do not dispose of diapers, sanitary products or other solids in toilets.
Washing Machines
All plumbing must be in compliance with State and Town plumbing codes.
Basement Fixtures
Backwater or check valves shall be installed in all accordance with 248 CMR Section 2.09(4) of
the Uniform State Plumbing Code and Article III, Section 4 of the town of Watertown Sanitary
Sewer and Strom Drain Regulations. > This means that any plumbing fixture located at an
elevation below the top of the manhole on the sewer serving the fixture requires a backwater or
check valve be installed at the Owner's expense.
House Connections
All sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs and washing machines shall drain to the Town sewer
system and not to storm drains. This keeps the environment clean!
Tree Roots
You can inhibit the growth of tree roots into your lines by use of commercially available products
in your toilet. Follow all instructions carefully.
