Project History
Safe Routes to School is a federally funded initiative of MassDOT
' Encourage students to walk and bike to school through education,
outreach, and infrastructure improvements
Request for Assessment from Hosmer School parents and staff
' Sent to MassDOT in May of 2012
Infrastructure Assessment conducted in October of 2012 by
Toole Design Group for MassDOT

' Objectives of the Infrastructure Assessment:
' Identify deficiencies or safety concerns relative students' travel route to
school;
10 Recommend infrastructure / safety improvements based on field
observations;
Develop a conceptual design to address highlighted issues.

Existing Conditions
Poor intersection geometry:
Excessive pavement widths at intersections;
' Long pedestrian crossing distances;
Poor crosswalk stopping compliance at School Street crossings;
Lack of crosswalks / ADA Compliance

• Lack of horizontal separation (grass strip)
Vehicles often park along sidewalk obstructing pedestrian traffic;

Project Goals & Objectives
Encourage elementary school students to walk and bike to
school;
Provide clear paths of travel for vehicles and pedestrians in the
vicinity of the school;
Enhance safety for all users;
Neighborhood beautification through reclaiming excess
pavement for grass strips and street trees.

9 Reconstruct sidewalks with granite curb and buffer strip;
40 Realign Chauncey Street / Boylston Street intersection;
Reconstruct secondary street intersections to reduce
pavement widths and pedestrian crossing distances, while
increasing visibility for all users;
Roadway reconstruction and drainage improvements;
Proposed Improvements & Benefits
Construct bump -outs at crosswalk locations, where feasible;
Restripe crosswalks with high -visibility "ladder type" markings;
Construct ADA-compliant wheelchair ramps at crosswalks;
Increase school zone awareness via signage and pavement

History of Project Outreach
Town of Watertown met with MassDOT Project Funding
Coordinator;
The Town spoke with the crossing guards assigned to the
Hosmer School;
Driveway openings were reviewed by the Zoning Enforcement
Officer in regards to compliance;
WorldTech Engineering held an informational meeting with
the Hosmer School and the Interim School Superintendent;
' Town Tree Warden reviewed existing /proposed street trees
(one potential tree removal);
WorldTech Engineering reviewed project with DPW, DCDP, and
the Police Department.

Construction Impacts
It Roadway Reconstruction
• Extensive pavement reconstruction (reclamation)
• Temporary roadway closures may be anticipated;
• Construction will require shifting of traffic, police details
Construction will minimize daily operations of Hosmer School;
Timing of construction in school zone to be coordinated
Temporary pedestrian detours will ensure accessible routes
throughout the duration of construction.
Construction substantially complete in 1 construction season.
