Attachments: S35C- 412103015370.pdf.pdf Dear Larry, Joe Wilson, Director of Public Works, used the attached tree plan and photographs to revisit the trees at 4 Sanctuary Place. Joe gave me the following information. Trees 13, 14, 15 are less than 6- inches at DBH (diameter at breast height) so these do not meet the definition of "tree" for density purposes. Trees 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are the city's trees. Trees 10, 11, 12, 16 are greater than 6- inches DBH and are your trees. Tree 10 — oak to remain Tree 11— oak to remain Tree 12 — palm to remain Tree 16 — a 13 -inch palm to be removed; too close to the house The Tree Ordinance requires a density of 3 trees per 4,500 square feet. The density requirement can also be stated as 1 tree per every 1,500 square feet. Only trees with a DBH of 6- inches or larger count toward the density. Your lot size is approximately 7,028 square feet according to the Chatham County Property Record Card. Therefore, the number of required trees is 4.68, rounded to 5. The tree density of 5 should have been met in 2006 when the house was built. Since it appears it was not, I will not require 5 trees, but you will need to continue to provide 4 trees. With removal of palm tree #16 next to the house, there are 3 trees remaining. Therefore, planting one tree that is 6- inches or larger is required. Or you may choose to mitigate the equivalent of 6 inches by planting 3 trees that are each 2- inches in diameter. Or if the diameters of trees 13, 14, and 15 add up to 6- inches, you can place them into protection and never allow them to be removed. The planted or protected trees are required to live 2 years. If they die they must be replaced. There isn't the option in your situation to pay $50 per inch as a mitigation fee since you are below the required density. The permit fee will be $50.
