JANUARY 2020
JANUARY 2020
Happy New Year!
Another year has come and gone and we look forward to continuing our good times
together in 2020! We begin the year by welcoming our new Case Worker to the Senior
Center team. Jenya Kruglyansky comes to us with a wealth of experience in elder
services and is eager to meet you. She is available for assistance with housing, food
stamps, fuel assistance, MassHealth and other emergency needs. She can also provide
consultations about services available to you to keep you living well at home in the
community. Learn a bit more about her in our Case Worker Corner on page 3.
January is also the month for one of our most popular Lunch and Learn presentations
about Tax Exemptions for Seniors in Watertown. We have invited the Town Assessor,
Town Auditor and Town Treasurer/Collector to provide you with this important information
on January 15 at 10:00 AM. Call today to register for this important event.
The Senior Center's Program Coordinator, Marina Kirsanova, has added some new items
to our calendar including a Reiki presentation, a Death Cafe event, a Harp Music
showcase, a presentation about Hearing Loss, and one about the services of the Perkins
Library. Please join us, and don't forget to sign in to a class or program or shuttle bus ride
with your My Senior Center Keytag. This helps to keep us informed on how best to serve
you. Rae, Margie or the shuttle drivers Jim or Bob will make sure to remind you. Thank
you for your cooperation.
Here's to all that 2020 will bring, and we hope to see you at the Senior Center!

TREASURER/
C01-1,EC1-OR TRIVIA!
Question 1: What can happen
when I'm late paying my Motor
Vehicle Excise bill?
A) A demand fee of $5 may
be assessed.
B) The Town may issue a
warrant to collect the
overdue amount to the
Deputy Collector, and
assess a $10 fee.
C) A notice that the warrant
has been issued to the
Deputy Collector is mailed
to the taxpayer, and a $12
fee is assessed.
D) Service of the warrant to
the taxpayer, and a $17
fee.
E) The Town puts a hold at
the Massachusetts Registry
of Motor Vehicles
preventing the renewal of
driver's license and
registration associated with
that vehicle, and $20 fee is
assessed.
F) Interest begins to accrue at
12% from the due date to
the payment date.
G) All of the above.
Discussion of Question 1: If you
answered G) All of the above, you

assist municipalities with the
collection of the motor vehicle
excise.

What to Do At
Single Biggest Ir
For most people, their largest investment is purchasing a house. What if it no longer meets your
needs? Children have moved out. You and your spouse are perhaps considering a time when one of
you has become ill or passed on. Cleaning all those rooms, walking up and down stairs, and doing
yard work is troublesome. Perhaps health concerns are a factor. Is it time to downsize?
Because its so important and the potential expensive problems so significant, many people
request help from experienced elder law attorneys for their tax saving, estate, asset protection
and life planning concerns. Are you concerned that financial gains from the sale of your home may
be tax free, however the proceeds will remain attachable by the State in event of a future nursing
home stay? Many seniors and those who love them learn, plan and act to protect their home,
spouse, family and life savings.
Homes, automobiles, antique collections, above nominal amounts must be sold to pay these bills.
An Elder Law attorney can help you with the right strategy to protect you, your spouse, home, family
and life savings. Did you realize studies show that 86% of trust and estate plans are outdated?
