Sarah Peake can also be reached at the State House at: 617 -722-2040 Really Easy White-Chocolate Dipped Peppermint Sugar Cookies Ingredients: 1 Package of refrigerated (ready-to-bake) sugar cookies, (OR you can use already-baked sugar cookies from a bakery OR your own favorite recipe) 1 Bag of white chocolate chips 2 Tablespoons of shortening (optional) 1/3 Cup of crushed candy canes or peppermint candies (to crush, unwrap candy and place in a plastic re-sealable bag. Smash them with a rolling pin or heavy frying pan until they are crushed) What to do: 1. Bake cookies according to package directions and allow to cool completely. 2. While they’re cooling, prepare a large sheet pan by lining it with parchment or waxed paper. 3. Place white chocolate chips and shortening (if using—it will make the chocolate smoother) in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in bursts of 15 seconds, stirring in between each burst for 10 seconds until chocolate is melted and smooth. 4. Dip half of the completely cooled cookies in the chocolate mixture, sliding the bottom of each cookie against the edge of the bowl to get rid of excess chocolate. Immediately transfer cookie to the parchment-lined sheet pan. (If chocolate becomes a bit hard to work with, just put it back in the microwave for 10-15 seconds) 5. Immediately sprinkle the crushed peppermint on the dipped part of the cookies. Allow to harden at room temperature. Feel free to experiment with different types of cookie dough, dips and toppings. Examples could be: chocolate cookies with dark chocolate and red jimmies, butterscotch with milk chocolate and green sanding sugar. The sky’s the limit! Happy baking! Do you think it’s going to Snow this winter? Take control of your life and secure a person to snow-plow your driveway now! The COA gets many calls asking us to recommend someone but, legally, we are not allowed to do that. Therefore, call your carpenter, landscaper, ask your neighbor whom they use, or maybe they are willing to help do the job for you at an agreed upon price. Planning ahead will secure your comfort and safety in your own home, which will make for a happier winter season! Page 4 Brewster, MA December 2020 Looking for something fun to do? I believe that you have the ability to do great things, things that will change the world for the better. In fact, you may have already done some things - choices you have made, people you have reached out to - that can have big consequences, and you deserve to know that. That’s why I have written this book.” First Words of “Living a Life That Matters,” Harold S. Kushner, Rabbi Laureate of Temple Israel, Natick, Massachusetts Joan and I have spent many days these past three months traveling to New Jersey, visiting the sick, attending a funeral, and more happily, as guests at an elegant wedding under the tent in Cape May. With one exception, we could have stayed home and everyone would have understood that the trip from Cape Cod to New Jersey is a day’s ride and we’re not getting any younger. Our kids are constantly trying to discourage us from these road trips, and in most cases I agree with them, but Joanie Carfora has this Neapolitan code that she lives by and is not easily swayed, especially since this code has been passed down from her father. That code, very simply stated in Italian is, “La mia faccia è pulita,” or “My face is clean.” You see, when you do what you feel is the “right thing” you never have to second guess yourself, and you will never be criticized. What more can I say than it’s an Italian thing! And when a Neapolitan wife makes a decision, the wise Sicilian husband practices Omerta, the code of silence. So next month we will once again get on the road to Florham Park, New Jersey, to attend yet another wedding. We’ll brace ourselves for the predictable phone calls from the kids, who will once again insist that we stay home and just respond to the invitation by sending a busta - a cash gift (another Italian wedding thing) - and be done with it! The nice thing about being a parent is that you never have to listen to your kids and you can politely remind them they never listened either. There will be more trips to New Jersey after this wedding, happy ones I hope. Life is full of family and friend obligations which need to be satisfied, and you can respond to them by taking the high road and making the effort no matter how daunting they may seem. Would I rather be sitting on my patio next to the firepit watching the world go by with a nice glass of Cabernet from Napa Valley? You bet! But truthfully, I must admit that when your grand nieces and nephews make a concerted effort to come to you and say, “Aunt Joan, Uncle Pete, you have no idea how appreciative we are that you are here to share this happy occasion with us,” and that makes it all worthwhile. In my ear I can hear my father-in-law’s voice whispering, “La mia faccia è pulita.” Peter R.
