Nothing of an untoward nature has occurred as re- gards communicable diseases. Five cases of infantile paraly- sis with one death were reported. Those cases caused lit- tle if any alarm among Summer visitors or others, as the incidence was less than in some other places. In no case was any particular connection as regards contact with the disease established. In the case of the patients in one fam- ily where the death occurred there had been no recent ab- seneefrom the County or any discoverable contact with the disease. A certain amount of scarlet fever has occurred, us- ually 'of a very mild nature. Very little diphtheria was reported, usually mild also. The diphtheria immunization clinics were carried on Co ntrl during the year. Practically all physicians in the Country have now a designated "health hour," when ehil- drett may be immunized against diphtheria at a reduced rate. Parents are urged to take their children to privet, Physicians for this treatment. All of the regular meetings, including the Southeast- ern Association of Boards of Health Cape Cod Health Bu- reau Association, Cape Cod Health Council etc., have been held during the year with good attendance. The follolvine lord Anders Officials have been speakers at these meetings: Dr. Gay- on, Dr. Luise Diez, Dr. Ralph Chambers, Dr. 97 ,ariolis resi- sies Lett, and I11r. Herewith I submit my sixth annual school report. The enrollment of the grades on October 1, 1935 282. Last year the enrollment was 283 as of the same date. It is interesting to note (See table on another page) that the enrollment October 1 1933 was 290. On October 1, 1932 it was 287, in 1931 it was 287 and in 1930 it was 260. A smaller enrollment i„ seen for each preceding year to 1924 when it was 204. The, so called, depression years have shown a somewhat larger enrollment though this has not been so apparent as in industrial communities where conditions lvel'c more directly effected by the closing b of shops and factories. In a community whose business is largely of resi- dential nature the growth of the school follows the devel- opment of the gown and conversely the school may be MI- sidered as making its contribution in residential advantages The members of the school faculty remained the sank At the opening of school in September as for last year. Sines the beginning of school, however, there has been a ehano'' in the home economics department. Miss Helen Beverly resigned, her resignation to become effective as of Noven- ber 20, 1935. She began her work here October 26, 1931. For slightly over four years Miss Beverly has been assoei- ated with the school. During that period she has contr'l- buted much toward the development of her department and promoting the growth of the she worked. Young people tvitlr lvlroul She managed the lunch service in addition to her teaching Program Her resignation was prom]. by her approaching lice] g marriage, Miss Doris Trowt was chosen to succeed Miss Bev- erly, Miss Trowt is a 1935 graduate, of the Fr•a)llingharll 129 S %11h_ l• f t L1 ri PL' Lli ' 0 lllla .clle',,• • it }l ;l t tlae pr il(tillilli+ }l;ls l)ll'il t }ire('te'(i 1C) \Yard ajQe franc } of $ 'Opi rll:l ),11' 4 111I)11:lsis ill t }le llflS ell tCre rraut 'olnetit is heienee. 3iiss n,l(cilstnlldill• ieS lvitll (+lltlllltii'ttilll ;lllLl ll by those fah a ,¢iratil' 1)r„ress is ll,'illa ll'l1CIE under t }le r)lr atlered iatclr ofa'Vallial.;c` elf (l }) }llll'tllllltle'•g t; "e1 11[t' it, illtl'llillt'lltl 1lU1SlCt e gllat c ,I (se tyre r rib ". . , °t l and m r. This is a series of four books one for each grade. The combined se- lections provide a more comprehensive course than was for- merly provided by purchase of separately bound selections by individual writers. By these additions I feel that the English material of the high school has been considerably amplified. It will be still further improved by the eventual addition of tllt other books. Let me here acknowledge the faithful work and val- uable cooperation of all those associates whose efforts have contributed toward educational opportunity and achieve- ment for the boys and girls. It is used week- ly for the training of the school orchestra and the Junior Community Band. The Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Orleans basketball team meet regularly in the new building- It also has been used most acceptably for all the dances and general assemblies of the school during the past year. In a large measure the Field House is meeting the needs of tile children for whom it was constructed. The high school has had an outstanding year in its athletic activities. In basketball the girls' team won the Championship for the Eastern Division. There was no play- off to decide the leading team for the Cape. For the second successive year the track team won first place at the Annual Meet of the Cape Schools at Barnstable. In baseball an all time high for the school was reached by winning the Cape Championship in a thrilling game played with Fal- mouth at Chatham on June 12. It is gratifying to report that Orleans High School continues to be rated in the Class A schools with reference to admission to the various Teachers' Colleges of the State. The New England College Entrance Certificate Board also granted the school a four year certificate privilege until December 31, 1938. This latter certificate privilege is given on a two fold basis. It is determined in part by a study of the program of the school - subjects tau -lit, length of per- iods, teachers and their preparation, etc. —and in part by the scholastic record in college of the students who gn from the schools to the various colleges. If our school is to retain the privilege it has obtained, it will be essential to recommend to the colleges only those students who are actually doing high grade work with us and who also give evidence of their determination to put first things first amid the greater. freedom that college life affords. . 10,J 6 1$3` out 'lasses °f heri orb Emplament Ststus ©f Cla. 'Itt1 11 lar N11 (111t111U- \11TIA Y fork S roger \utnitier C ebuf 11 All Class ins, r"(111caittoll B 5 1 loeat e11tp 46 1st l'reseri 'resent vel ve L tile e lalst tllliool e11 1 Oat lthe above t €life. 111c"C"tes . The High School chorus goes on with three and four part and unison singing using a variety of songs in be- coming acquainted with some of the great sacred and se- cular songs by famous composers, and the singing of the more familiar folly songs, 11, the past a large and non- selective chorus has sung at the various Monomauset con- certs, but this year a smaller and selected group is pre- paring a cantata to be given at the concert in the spring. This group will then be doing work comparable to that of the orchestra of selected plasters, and it ivill give those who are more advanced in their singing an opportunity to use their ability to greater advantage and enjoyment. Music is taught in the schools to enrich the lives of those studying it and of those in the community who are the listeners. Let us, therefore, use these youllg musicians whenever possible in choirs, entertainments and friendly informal gatherings. It will add to our pleasure and tbeir experience, training them to take their places as citizens of the community in the future.
