WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT PROJECT
TAPPAN AVENUE AND PIERMONT STREET
The Watertown Department of Public Works, through its contractor, Commonwealth Construction, Inc.,
will be replacing the water main on Tappan Avenue and Piermont Street, beginning Thursday, June 27,
2019. The scope of work includes replacement and upgrade of the water main, upgrades to water main
services from the main to the curb stop, hydrants, and miscellaneous other work on these streets.
A temporary by-pass system to provide water during construction will be installed before the actual
construction begins. Water will be supplied to homes at all times throughout the project duration using
this temporary by-pass piping. All homes either serviced by and or/providing water to this temporary
system will not be billed for water consumption during the course of this project. The contractor will need
access to your home to complete connection of the by-pass. You will be notified when access for the
connection is required.
• During the course of this work, you will experience short periods of discoloration and reduced
pressure. You will be notified of any specific water system shutdown procedure 48 hours
beforehand, except in emergency situations.
• You will also experience inconveniences to vehicular travel and parking. On -street parking will
not be allowed near the work area during this period; however access to driveways will be
maintained at all times. Roads around the work area will be closed to through traffic.
• The expected work hours on are from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

As described above, the scope of this project includes the replacement and upgrade of your water
service from the corporation (at the main in the street) to the curb stop (usually located in the grass strip
or sidewalk). The rest of the service (to your home) is your responsibility. You may wish to take this
opportunity to upgrade your service to maximize the benefits of these improvements and to replace any
deficient materials, such as lead or iron, with copper pipe. For information as to the material present in
your private water service, please contact the DPW. We also suggest that homeowners use this
opportunity to review residential interior plumbing and appurtenances (e.g. hot water heaters).
