March 2020 Happy March! I am pleased to put the spotlight on the Knitting Group this month. About two and a half years ago, Council on Aging Board member and avid knitter, Esther Keaney, asked me "Where are all the knitters?" In reality, many of these ladies were knitting at home, working on their own projects, and often creating scarves and helmet liners for servicemen and women overseas, baby hats for the Watertown Family Network and hospitals, and lap blankets for hospices, but my and Esther's hope was they would all knit together at the Senior Center. After months of outreach and postings in this newsletter, one person came ... and then another ... and now we are most fortunate to have a group of eight women (and more each week) who come together to share conversation and friendship while knitting. They meet on Wednesday afternoons at 12:30 in the Senior Center lounge and work on various independent projects. My thanks to them for donating so many beautiful hand -made items to local organizations too. Please take a look at all of the offerings we have scheduled for March, particularly the calendar, and take note of any changes in times (if any) for group gatherings. You will notice that as we have added more programs, we now have more visitors to the Senior Center. To maintain smooth transitions from program to program, kindly wait to enter a room until the previous visitors have exited. Programs begin according to the times posted in this newsletter and at the Senior Center. If you have been accustomed to coming early to have a cup of coffee or eat lunch, you will now probably have to wait in the lounge before entering your designated program space. If your group desires additional time before or after, please make an appointment to see the Program Coordinator, Marina, or me, to discuss the issues. Thank you for your cooperation, and we'll see you at the Center! Housing is one of the most deeply concerning issues in my work. / am getting many calls from seniors who need to move out, because their landlord decided to sell the property or,because my clients couldn't afford to pay the rent. lenya Krug/yansky My role is to lay out all the options available and to make sure I provide all the necessary information and resources that my clients need for the transition. One of the long-term strategies I recommend is to apply for private or town -subsidized housing as soon as you can. The waiting list time can be up to six years for Watertown residents and at least ten years for non- residents. The only immediate solutions for those who just lost a place to live would be to seek a friend or family member to stay with, or to go to a shelter in Waltham, Cambridge, or Boston. The longer -term solution is to apply for other congregate housing with Waltham and/or Newton Housing Authorities. The whole process might take from three to six months, given that there are few current openings. The other option is to apply for a room with an affordable rent through Metro Boston area housing agencies. Another way to look for low-income housing is to participate in the lottery administered by Metrowest Collaborative Development (https://metrowestcd.org ). Visit their website or call me to get more information about the process and the timeframes. I will help with filling in the applications and identifying the necessary verification documents. If necessary, I will facilitate communication with the agency and will advocate on the client's behalf. des., Case Worker Museum of Russian Icons and lunch at Clinton Bar and Grill (on your own) Thursday, March 12 Leaves from the Senior Center at 10 am The Museum of Russian Icons is located in Clinton, Massachusetts.
