HomeMy Public PortalAboutr 99:71No. 99-71 Date of AdoptionFebruar¥ 18, 1999 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE 50 STATES COMMEMORATIVE COIN PROGRAM. WHEREAS, The United States Congress created the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program to honor the 50 states, to increase knowledge of the history and geography of the individual states, and to encourage young people and their families to collect memorable tokens of the states for the face value of the coins; and WHEREAS, The 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act provides for the redesign of the reverse side of the United States quarter with designs emblematic of each of the 50 states to be issued in the sequence that the states ratified the Constitution of the United States or were admitted to the Union, in a series of five quarters each year from 1999 through 2008; and WHEREAS, For the New Jersey commemorative quarter, the New Jersey Commemorative Coin Design Commission, with approval of Governor Christine Todd Whitman, selected the image of George Washington Crossing the Delaware River as portrayed in the famous 1851 painting by Emanuel Leutze; and WHEREAS, Production of the first circulating commemorative state quarters is projected at more than 500 million circulating quarters for each of the five states to be honored in 1999, with the New Jersey quarters to be available for shipment to the Federal Reserve Banks in May 1999; and WHEREAS, The United States Mint arranged a 50 States Commemorative Quarter Program Launch on December 7, 1998, at the Philadelphia Mint at which the United States Treasurer, the Director of the United States Mint, the Governor of Delaware and other invitees started the presses for the production of the Delaware commemorative quarter; and WHEREAS, The commencement of the production of the New Jersey commemorative quarter deserves no less a ceremonial start. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the governing body of the Borough of Carteret, County of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, that this body urges the United States Mint to commence the production of the New Jersey commemorative quarter in a public ceremony at the Philadelphia Mint. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this resolution be sent to the Director of the United States Mint and the New Jersey Commemorative Coin Design Commission. I hereby certify the foregoing to be a true copy of a resolution adopted by the Borough of Carteret at a meeting held on February 18, 1999. · Adopted this 18th of February, 1999 and Certified as a true copy of the original on February 19, 1999.
