MAYORS' MESSAGE
City Council Meeting: August 21, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.
Even though I have posted this message once before many people have requested that I post it again.
WHAT YOU'RE WORTH
A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 dollar bill. In the room of 200, he asked,
"Who would like this $20.00 dollar bill?" Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20.00 dollar
bill to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple the $20.00 dollar bill up. He then asked,
"Who still wants it?" Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, "What if I do this?
And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now
crumpled and dirty. 'Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.
You still wanted it My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson here today. No matter what I did to
the money, because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.00 dollars.
Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the
circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or
what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still
priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by
WHO WE ARE. You are special — Don't EVER forget it."
Count your blessings, not your problems. Never be afraid to try something new. And remember: amateurs
built the ark...professionals built the Titanic.
Sincerely, Mayor Brad Andersen
BACK TO SCHOOL - MOVIE IN THE PARK
August 24"' (Friday) @ dusk we will be having a movie in the park. Bring a blanket or a chair and a neighbor.
There will be free popcorn, water, and soda.
IONA DAYS
On behalf of the City I would like to thank all of those who helped out with Iona Days. All of those involved in
the melodrama, Historical committee for Friday night's dinner, the fun run/walk, Lions Club Breakfast, the LDS
Church for the Saturday night dinner, and the movie in the park. Fun was had by all!
If anyone would like to buy an Iona Days T-Shirt, they are $8.00 or two for $15.00. They can be purchased at
the City Building from 9 to 5 p.m., Monday — Friday.
MAYOR'S YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE
A little over six years ago we had a Mayor's Youth Committee; where we did service, taught leadership skills,
and the youth advised the City on items or direction that they would like. We had the committee for a couple of
years and then we joined the Idaho Falls Youth Committee. Now there has been an interest shown by some
youth in the City on having our own youth committee again. If you are interested please call the Mayor at 521-
6970 or e-mail at: iona ma or hotmail.com. This would be for outh ran•in• from 6th grade to seniors.
CITY CLERK RETIRING - ROBYN KEYEYS
After 4 1/2 years our City Clerk, Robyn Keyes has decided to retire and become a school teacher. Robyn will
start teaching school this fall as a 5th grade teacher at Iona Elementary. We wish her the best in this endeavor,
but she surely will be missed. The City will be honoring her at our City Council meeting on August 21st
(Tuesday) around 7:30 p.m. Please stop by and tell her bye.
NEW CITY CLERK - JULIE HAMMOND
Julie Hammond is our new City Clerk. Julie was born and raised in Idaho Falls and has lived near Iona for the
past twelve years. She has a clerical background with an Associates Certificate in Accounting. She has spent
the last eight years with School District #93. She said she is excited to be here and is looking forward to
meeting local residents and serving the community.
CONSERVATION OF WATER
Last year the month of June the City residents used over 34,000,000 gallons of water. That is over 53,000
gallons per household. This year for the month of June the City residents has used over 52,000,000 gallons of
water; which comes out to be over 83,000 gallons of water per household.
Idaho is in a drought, along with 560/0 of the United States. Southeastern Idaho is 3 1/2 inches under normal
precipitation for this time of the year. This spring I asked the residents to water every other day if you have an
automatic sprinkler system and not between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when water evaporates. The
other day our police officer noticed over 75 homes watering in the middle of heat of the day for hours on end.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but we need everyone to do their part in conserving our precious resource,
"our water." We as a City don't want to force and/or fine people for wasting water, so we are asking once again
to, "please be water wise."
RECYCLING
As a City we have been talking about recycling for quite some time and we have had people approach us, but
we could not find a company willing to provide the service. Well the other day I had a neighbor (Andersen's), no
relation told me that they found a company (Western Recycling) that will provide you a container and they will
pick it up every two weeks. They will recycle about everything (e.g., paper, aluminum, cardboard...), except for
glass. You put it in the container they provide and they will pick it up and separate for you, all for $5.00 a
month. This will save you a hassle of storing it in your garage until you have enough, separating it, and then
spending the time and money of taking it into town. There is only one catch, they need at least 20 residents in
Iona for them to provide service to this area.
There is another company already providing service to a few people in Iona. They will pick up paper, aluminum,
cardboard and glass for $12 per month. They also pick up every other week.
Not only is this the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do. Also, if you don't think you would have enough
stuff every two weeks, get with a neighbor and split the cost. To sign up you will have to call Western Recycling
or stop by.
