Lightning Detection vs. Lightning Prediction
The ThorGuard difference because the danger is real!
Lightning represents a substantial concern for outdoor activities during many months of the
year, that much is known. What many don't know is that ThorGuard is the only company in the
world capable of predicting lightning strikes and provide automatic warning, even when the
skies appear safe.
• Detection technology needs a lightning strike to occur before any notification can be
provided; therefore it can never pick up the first strike or the last strike.
• Weather radar sweeps provide data that is typically 5-16 minutes delayed so it cannot
identify a storm cell that develops directly over the top of the site until it's too late.
• The 30/30 rule, if fully applied, is better than no policy but lacks meteorological
foundation. It is no more than an exercise in the measurement of the speed of light vs.
the speed of sound.
• Software based on National Lightning Detection Network data, though informative in a
general sense, does not provide truly accurate site-specific warnings. If these products
were highly reliable, the military, NASA and other high-risk operations would not install
site-specific sensors. NLDN sensors also loose detection efficiency for weaker lightning
discharges.
• Detection systems require built-in filters to prevent high false-alarm rates caused by
transformers, alternators, near-by high power lines and even microwave transmissions.
• "Lightning can strike 6-10 miles from the leading edge of a storm. 30% of victims are
struck under blue skies before the storm arrives." "60% of victims are struck under blue
skies after storms have passed." Source:Lightning Injury Facts, 1995,Mary Ann Cooper,MD
• "Unorganized convection (pop-up storms) was responsible for 84.4% of fatal lightning
events 1994-2004"Source: Reassessment of U.S. Lightning Mortality,2009,Walker Ashley&Christopher Gilson
ThorGuard monitors the "charge separation" of positive and negative energy within the
atmosphere — the cause of lightning. One ThorGuard sensor, located at a particular site
monitors the atmosphere 500 times per second. Monitoring the dynamic change between the
ground, surface charge and atmosphere differentiates ThorGuard from ALL detection
devices/systems. Measuring the precise charge separation of this energy allows ThorGuard to
predict a lightning strike with areas as tight as 1,4 mile to a normal range of 2% miles. All
ThorGuard systems are accurate to 1 mV at 15 miles. Automatic warnings ("Red Alert") before
the first strike and signaling an "All Clear"when conditions are safe to resume activities removes
the enormous responsibility placed upon the facility staff.
The significance of this technology allows ThorGuard to predict the first strike 8-20 minutes in
advance as well as the last strike. In short, ThorGuard will
• Allow you to stop certain activities when it is dangerous
• Keep you open safely for longer periods of time
• Safely resume activities more quickly
