RESOLUTION SUPPORTING HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
RESOLUTION 254
WHEREAS, the United States House of Representatives Resolution 254 urges that
the United States in its negotiations with Cuba insist upon the return of Joanne
Chesimard and all individuals who fled the United States to Cuba in order to avoid
prosecution; and
WHEREAS. the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Carteret (the "Borough")
believe that individuals accused of crimes in the United States should be fully
prosecuted in order to determine their guilt or innocence; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council believe it is an injustice to victims to permit
potentially responsible individuals to avoid the criminal justice system by enjoying a
safe haven in Cuba.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the
Borough of Carteret that they support the House of Representatives Resolution 254.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that President Clinton is urged to insist upon the
return of individuals avoiding prosecution in the United States as a part of any
negotiations with Cuba.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be forwarded to
Representative Robert Menendez and Representative Bob Franks to evidence the
Borough's support for the House of Representative Resolution 254.
