We have been notified of a resignation of a school committee member. Under the
Charter section 4 the Town Council has two options to fill the unexpired term.
After discussion with the Town Clerk, John Flynn and the Town Attorney, Mark
Reich, I am asking that the option to allow for a special election be considered to
fill this vacancy.
We can have the special election to coincide with the municipal election process
that takes place this year, which has nomination papers available now and July 31.
2017 as the deadline to submit them.
We would then follow the calendar and have a preliminary election (if needed) on
Sept. 19th, followed by the general election on Nov.7th.
I believe this is sufficient time to gather the necessary signatures and is an
appropriate approach to allow the voters to choose a candidate.
