Although COVID-19 has put a halt to our programs that take place at the Senior Center, we have moved many of our offerings to a Zoom format, where you can participate via a computer, smart phone or regular Iandline phone in your home. We know this is not ideal, but more people each week are learning how to participate, and laughter and conversation are being shared once again among our members. Our Program Coordinator, Marina, has done a great job assisting participants and adding new programs of interest. Despite the new Zoom technology, we miss all of our seniors very much and we encourage you to reach out to us and let us know how you are doing. Rae, Margie, Marina, Jenya and I are available to take your calls and to say hello. As we move through the next few months, the Senior Center eventually will be open by appointment -only for some services like senior parking permits, case worker services, SHINE counseling, and other items but we do not have a date yet, so please call us if you need assistance. Zoom with us on July 16 at 12:30 PM for more details (pg. 3). In terms of the Senior Shuttle Bus, we know this service is critical and important to our seniors, so be assured that we are working on a plan to get the bus back on the road with appropriate PPE and other social distancing measures to keep the drivers and riders safe. If you need a ride to a medical appointment, we will still provide taxi rides as available. My thanks to the Honorable Town Council, the Town Manager and the COA Board for their continued support of our efforts to keep Watertown seniors supported and engaged. As my mother often says, "Be well and keep smiling." I couldn't agree more. PAGE . We know that some seniors want to participate in our activities, have access to the Internet and gadgets, but are still confused and frustrated about using email, Internet browsers, and downloading applications. Zoom Reality - Now Normal Ahen the Senior Center closed in March due to the OV/D-i9 pandemic / was desperate. l used to spend a large part of my week at the Senior Center participating ifferent activities: art, yoga, and exercise classes as well as bridge and i ersation group. When the Council on Aging (COA) began offering activi- 3 and classes online I was thrilled, but I did not have any experience using Internet and no knowledge of Zoom. My daughter downloaded the Zoom on my iPhone and said I would be able to join the meeting by clicking on link sent by the Senior Center. iT was not so simple. Sometimes the link worked and sometimes it did not. Then my Vanddaughter updated the Zoom app so now it works more easily. Whenever I have a prob- lem I call the COA and they help me very patiently. Now, despite the pandemic, I am busy and happy participating in many Senior Center activities and classes offered on Zoom. A few friends called me to ask how they too can participate in the online activities, but they are apprehensive when they find out they have to use Zoom. They say, "At our age we are not able to learn technology." I tell them, "If I did it you can do it too!" And learning technology at our age is definitely worth the effort. feeesc 2t ,Zoom, Zoom... and away .... It's a whole new world. i had done a few Zoom meetings with out-of-town family members but ncithing as large and directed as Senior Center gatherings. Coffee with the Chiefs, Book Club, Thursday morning Conversation with Tom, Anne -Marie's Tuesday chat, and Readers' Advisory Circle with Emily have all been suc- seful for me. For those trying Zoom for the first time, Marina, Program Co- lintor at the Senior Center, has been very helpful and encouraging. Online programs can be daunting for individuals who do not have smart phones or computers, but the staff at the Senior Center has worked overtime h ving to help anyone who wishes to participate. Zcm started at the Senior Center out of necessity when the coronavirus Iockdo wit went into effect. I hope it will continue for some very positive reasons. First, the virus itself will be with us for a while and until there is a vaccine, all of us who are older and/or compromised will have to be extremely cautious about mingling in groups. Having Zoom as the vehicle by which we can continue to be together online is fantastic. Second, consider weather. Once winter arrives, we have the ongoing concern about getting to the center for our favorite programs. Many of us don't like driving in bad weather. Even when we will be physically meeting again, it would be wonderful to have in -person programs offered on Zoom if the weather is bad. Third, we are faced with the possibility of being displaced during construction of the new high school and relocated in a new Senior Center. Depending on where the new high school is built, this could mean 3-4 years without a permanent "home." Zoom is a perfect way to continue our presence and our activities during that time. While Zooming is not the same as gathering in person, there are some definite advantages. I don't have to arrive early to try to find a parking spot that may or may not materialize, I don't have to look quite as presentable as I do in person, and I don't have to worry about the weather. -71d,, PAGE 6 • WATERTOWN SENIOR NEWS • 617 972 6490 • July 2020 Virtual Free v -w Museum Tours Right now, we're all experiencing a touch of cabin fever.
