The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off! Moral of the story: Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and a step up. Sincerely, Brad Andersen, Mayor Items of Business: 1. The City would like to thank the Iona Lion's Club for the 4th and 23rd of July breakfasts. Money raised is going toward making the pioneer statues. The first one (woman with baby) will be completed by the end of September. 2. We would like to thank Arlene Riding and all those that made the melodrama a great success. 3. Also, we would like to thank the Historical Committee for the historical tour, dinner, and all they did to make lona Days great. 4. Movie in the park will be August 26 beginning at dusk. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a free family movie 5. If you want to run for City Council applications will be available at the City Clerk's office beginning August 2, 2011. The candidate filing period opens August 29, 2011 and closes September 9, 2011. Two Council seats are up for election in November. 6. The City is looking for someone to donate a nice love seat or small couch for the City building please call the City office at 523-5600. New Park: We are working on a new park on the corner of Iona Road and Quaky Aspen Street. This year we are planning to landscape, plant grass, and hopefully plant some trees. We are looking for volunteers who want to do some service in the community in helping the City. We are looking at hopefully having a small splash park next year and then in the future, an outdoor swimming pool. But before we do anything we will be putting out a survey to get the community's ideas and what they want; plus informing the community on how we can finance this endeavor (e.g. grant, loan, etc.). Water Conservation: We have had a few calls concerning water pressure this summer. During the month of May we used a little over 11 million gallons of water; June we used over 35 million gallons of water, and July we have used almost 60 million gallons of water. We now have 620 connections on the water system. That means that each connection is using over 3,000 gallons of water each day. Most of this usage can be contributed to new home owners putting in their yards, which uses a lot of water to get the grass growing. But whatever the reason; we cannot continue to use this much water on a daily bases. We are ASKING people to CONSERVE their water usage. The City would ask people if your address ends with an odd number (e.g., 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) to water only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Those with an even last number for their address (e.g., 0, 2, 4, 6, 9) to water on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. You do not need to water your lawn every day (unless it is a new lawn). All you need to do is water a little longer every other day and your lawn will be healthier and you won't use as much water. Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, so we are asking you to give our water system a day of rest by limiting your water usage on Sunday. You can make a difference and we all need to do our part. Thank you! .y NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING PROPOSED BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2011-2012 CITY OF IONA, IDAHO Notice is hereby given that the City Council of the City of Iona, Idaho will hold a public hearing for consideration of the proposed budget for the fiscal period October 1, 2011- September 30, 2012 pursuant to the provisions of Section 50-1002, IC., said hearing to be held at the Iona Community Center 3548 North Main Street, Iona, Idaho at 7:15 p.m., on August 16, 2011.
