Zoom Pilates with Marina Zaslayskaia Thursday, August 20 & 27, at 9:00 am Pilates is known to be good for every body of every age. Seniors, in particular, can really . , benefit from a Pilates practice. Balance, strength, flexibility, focus, and your breath are all areas you may notice have changed with age. Pilates at its core works on improving all of those things. It is gentle enough to be right for you at any age, and every exercise can be modified on any given day to meet you where your body is that day. Allow Pilates to do its job for your body by meeting it wherever it is on any given day. Marina has been teaching aerobics classes, Zumba, and Power Pilates for more than 10 years at Waverley Oaks Ath- letic Club, and Boston Sport Clubs. The Watertown COA thanks all of our advertisers. I used to spend Cl large part of my week at the Senior Center participating in different activities: art, yoga, and exercise classes as well as bridge and conversation group. When the Council on Aging (COA) began offering activi- ties and classes online I was thrilled, but I did not have any experience using the Internet and no knowledge of Zoom. My daughter downloaded the Zoom app on my iPhone and said I would be able to join the meeting by clicking on Lhe link sent by the Senior Center. It was not so simple. Sometimes the link worked and sometimes it did not. Then my granddaughter updated the Zoom app so now it works more easily. Whenever I have a prob- lem I call the COA and they help me very patiently. Now, despite the pandemic, I am busy and happy participating in many Senior Center activities and classes offered on Zoom. A few friends called me to ask how they too can participate in the online activities, but they are apprehensive when they find out they have to use Zoom. They say, "At our age we are not able to learn technology." I tell them, "If I did it you can do it too!" And learning technology at our age is definitely worth the effort. Gc Zoom, Zoom... and away _... It's a whole new world. I liad done a few Zoom meetings with out-of-town family members but othing as large and directed as Senior Center gatherings. Coffee with the Chiefs, Book Club, Thursday morning Conversation with Tom, Anne -Marie's Tuesday chat, and Readers' Advisory Circle with Emily have all been suc- ssful for me. For those trying Zoom for the first time, Marina, Program Co- orclinator at the Senior Center, has been very helpful and encouraging. Online programs can be daunting for individuals who do not have smart phones or computers, but the staff at the Senior Center has worked overtime tieing to help anyone who wishes to participate. Zoom started at the Senior Center out of necessity when the coronavirus lockdown went into effect. I hope it will continue for some very positive reasons. First, the virus itself will be with us for a while and until there is a vaccine, all of us who are older and/or compromised will have to be extremely cautious about mingling in groups. Having Zoom as the vehicle by which we can continue to be together online is fantastic. Second, consider weather. Once winter arrives, we have the ongoing concern about getting to the center for our favorite programs. Many of us don't like driving in bad weather. Even when we will be physically meeting again, it would be wonderful to have in -person programs offered on Zoom if the weather is bad. Third, we are faced with the possibility of being displaced during construction of the new high school and relocated in a new Senior Center. Depending on where the new high school is built, this could mean 3-4 years without a permanent "home." Zoom is a perfect way to continue our presence and our activities during that time. While Zooming is not the same as gathering in person, there are some definite advantages. I don't have to arrive early to try to find a parking spot that may or may not materialize, I don't have to look quite as presentable as I do in person, and I don't have to worry about the weather. -%tom PAGE 6 • WATERTOWN SENIOR NEWS - - Virtual Free Museum Tours Peabody Essex Museum https://www.pem.org/virtua1-tours Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum https://artsandcuIture.google.com/partner/isabelIa-stewart-gardner -museum Museum of Fine Arts, Boston https://artsandcuIture.google.com/partner/museum-of-fine-arts- boston?hl=en.
