I have had the privilege of living in Claremont for thirteen years. I have been a history teacher for five years and am currently the president of the Cucamonga Teachers Association. My vision for Claremont is twofold. First, I hope to maintain the charm and historical integrity which makes Claremont the finest, most unique city in the valley. Second, I aspire to represent the opinions, visions and concerns of Claremont's citizens. I believe the primary role of a city councilman is not only to contribute to policymaking, which accurately reflects the views of Claremont's residents, but to address issues that impact the quality of life in Claremont. I respectfully ask you to vote for me for City Council. I pledge to share my energy, enthusiasm, collaborative spirit and respect for your opinions with the City Council. Your support is greatly appreciated. /s/ STEVEN MARKLEY ? FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL RICHARD BUNCK Age: 53 Occupation: Semi-Retired Business Executive 27 year resident of Claremont B.A. Economics, UC Irvine I love Claremont the way it is. It has maintained a quaint, sleepy College town atmosphere over the years. We've limited development, maintained some open spaces, and preserved the look and feel of small town Claremont. I like that, but it is changing. It is changing because the present City Councilmembers are implementing their interpretation of bringing Claremont into the twenty-first century: Village West, a waste transfer station, a huge sports complex, high density housing projects. These are all ideas and plans of the present City Council. Give the same City Council four more years and small town Claremont will be gone forever. There are many ways to improve the quality of life in Claremont without drastically changing it and spending millions in the process. For instance, we could keep the library open 7 days a week for $250,000. We could utilize the old packing house for a community theater and/or a museum. Any changes that we make in Claremont should be minimal and directly benefit Claremont Citizens. If you share my view of Claremont's future, vote for me and I will be your voice on the City Council. /f/ RICHARD BUNCK r FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL SANDY BALDONADO Occupation: Attorney/Community Volunteer I am a candidate for the City Council because I want to contribute to Claremont's future as we enter a new century. I have been a part of Claremont for more than thirty (30) years; as a teacher at Vista School; elected Water Board member; mother of four Claremont High graduates; active volunteer with many community organizations; and, as a Claremont business owner. Past councils have successfully preserved and maintained Claremont's unique personality. We must continue to seek progressive, creative ~olutions to insure financial stability and soundness in the face of Sacramento's disregard for the needs of local government. We need to be more inclusive and encourage all of Claremont's citizens to participate positively in its governance. I believe my experience as Claremont's representative on Three Valleys Municipal Water Board; community volunteer; and member of Claremont's business and professional community will serve the citizens of Claremont well as we move together into a most challenging new century. I ask for your vote on March 2 ! , Isl SANDY BALDONADO FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL KAREN M. ROSENTHAL Age: 54 ,;Occupation: Incumbent '.' . Grew up in Southern California. Member of numerous other community organizations Claremont continues to be an oasis in the midst of the megalopolis that is Los Angeles County. For 26 years I participated in my community as a volunteer for many organizations. As a council member I have diligently and cooperatively worked to maintain the high quality of Claremont life by my concern for and involvement in matters of transportation, human services, public works and infrastructure planning and maintenance. It has been a rewarding experience meeting with Claremont residents and sharing their neighborhood and community concerns. I have the knowledge, the enthusiasm and the energy to serve this city as a reelected member of the city council. I look forward to working with residents to make positive and lasting contributions to this wonderful community. /sl KAREN M. ROSENTHAL ---------- FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL BILL WIESE Age: Occupation: 49 Businessman B.A. I M.B.A. Michigan State University Chair - Claremont Sports Committee Board Member - Claremont Little League Former - Community Services Commissioner Little League and A YSO coach I am a businessman, husband and father. My eleven year old son is active in school, sports, and the community. My wife is a respected real estate agent and is especially concerned about property values. My young family and my M.B.A. give me a perspective not shared by other members of the Council. I am proud to have recently completed a four year term as a Community Services Commissioner. While becoming known for asking the tough questions, I have demonstrated that I know how to make decisions while respecting the rights of both individual citizens and property owners. We should expect leadership from the City Council that protects the unique Claremont quality of life from gradual degradation. We should expect excellent core services such as law enforcement, street maintenance, trash collection, and city government itself, delivered at the lowest reasonable cost. Finally, we should expect respectful treatment from elected officials at all times. I will work to make a city of which we can all be proud. Isl BILL WIESE FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL BOB SARVER Age: Occupation: 67 Property Manager I have been a resident of Claremont for 10 years. I love this community and would like to be a part of helping to guide our community into the new millennium. I have been involved in the local political scene for the past 5 years. I currently serve as President of Active Claremont, having served 2 terms as Treasurer. I attended UCLA, pre-law; Chicago University, Sociology; and Moore Theological Seminary studying Theology and Sociology. I am a non- practicing Para-Legal. I worked for over 20 years as a social worker, working with the homeless and inner-city poor in 2 of our major cities before semi-retirement and moving to Claremont. I feel the City Council needs members that will serve all of our citizens, being sensitive to the wants and needs of the community. I feel it is time for a change in our Council with someone who has new and fresh ideas, with an approach to issues that has the welfare of our citizens first and foremost. I would like to be that Councilmember for you. Your vote for me and change will be greatly appreciated. Member, Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Claremont League of Women Voters, Friends of the Claremont Library. Is/ BOB SARVER FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL ALBERT F. QUINTANAR Age: 38 Occupation: Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor My name is Albert F. Quintanar and I am running for Claremont City Council. Change is a part of life. I am all for change if there is a direct benefit to the public. However, the thought in the city at this time is to change the very landscape we have known and loved for so many years. There are a number of issues to consider. First, is the proposed temporary waste facility to be built on Foothill and Claremont Boulevards to which I am opposed. Second, the development of Claremont West to act as an attraction to major chain stores which will destroy the packing house and hurt other businesses in the village. Third, a disregard to the outlying areas of the city. Sections that feel disenfranchised by a lack of representation in an at-large city council. Yes, we do need change to allow the city to continue to grow. However, it need not come from bringing in trash, big business, and it should include a city government that is represented by all of its constituents. These are the issues as they should be presented to you. This is our city; let's take it back! If I ALBERT F. QUINTANAR FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL ALGIRD G. LEIGA Age: 65 Occupation: Councilmember IBusiness Executive Today our city is healthy and our residents feel proud to tell people that they live in Claremont. However, in my nine years as your councilmember we have struggled through the consequences of a recession and significant state take-aways of city revenues. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to overcome the repercussions of these events through prudent management of financial resources. I will continue to use my business experience to improve our financial health through operating efficiencies and business development. My priorities include maintaining our high quality public safety, senior programs, parks, roads and all public facilities. Cooperation with our schools is essential to be able to implement meaningful youth programs and joint operating efficiencies. As President of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments I have been able to identify business opportunities for Claremont and improvements in public transportation. I will leverage my community service experience to benefit all of our residents. My wife Ann and I moved to Claremont in 1973 and raised our four children here. Claremont is our home. I want to retain the quality of life that we all expect in Claremont. I ask for your vote and ideas to improve our city.
