COLUMN
MRWE with
MARINA KIRSANOVA, LSW
Elder abuse happens every day, but
holidays can present a greater risk.
People who are physically, emotionally
or psychologically frail and dependent
on others for care are most at risk of
elder abuse. Abuse and neglect can
happen in the home, as well as in
residential care or nursing homes and
hospitals. It can involve care workers,
family, neighbors, friends or strangers.
People most at risk at home include:
anyone with an illness that affects
memory or ability to communicate;
those in a poor relationship with their
caretaker; those who provide housing,
financial or emotional support to the
caretaker; those who depend on a
caretaker with drug or alcohol problems;
the socially isolated.
The annual visit with family and friends
during the holidays is a good
opportunity to check in with elders to
see if they are being treated with care
and respect by everyone in their life.
If you yourself are witnessing or
experiencing harm through abuse or
neglect, or are worried about a friend,
relative or client, there are ways to help.
You may call Marina at the Watertown
Senior Center, the Police Department or
Protective Services in your area. Your
confidentiality is assured.
You Could Be Eligible for Fuel
Assistance through the COAIM LAITY
TEAMWORK FUEL ASSISTANCE
FR 0 GAM (LIHEAP)
Fuel Assistance can pay part of your
winter heating bills. You can rent or own
your home. If your heat is included in
your rent, you may also qualify.

information or to apply.

2019.
