9 Happy New Year f &ww att of vs at fhz S&v A o C Etter!
An amazing year has come and gone and we at the Council on Aging are all looking forward to more
Q good times, friendship and service in the New Year. Thank you to all of the patrons who visit the Senior
/Center and who ride the Senior Shuttle. Thank you to the volunteers who assist us with programming
and who work at the Food Pantry, to the Board members who provide advice and guidance, and to the
Friends who contribute to our efforts. We are grateful for all of your support.
As you make your resolutions, we hope you will add visiting the Senior Center to your list. We offer exercise classes,
lectures, trips, and opportunities to gather with old and new friends for games, movies and more. If you have questions
about Medicare, taxes, food stamps, heating fuel or emergency assistance, or need a ride to the doctor's office or to the
grocery store, we can help.
New in 2018, we can also get you a ride to the Senior Center, courtesy of the Watertown Community Foundation, and are
moving our Thursday movies from the front lounge to the activity room to accommodate more patrons. In addition, we will be
starting a Telephone Reassurance program for our seniors. Call us for more information.
Here's to all that 2018 will bring... including the 25th Anniversary of the Senior Center! More details to come.
Cheers to the New Year!

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT 101
Join us when Wendy Rousseau of Care One
Newton explains the importance of
medication management. It cannot be
overstated, especially when taking medications
simultaneously to treat different conditions and
symptoms. While we've quickly become used to
the idea of ourselves, aging loved ones, and
parents taking more and more pills and vitamins
each day, it has a number of potential health
hazards, including dangerous drug interactions
and over -medication.

THE
SHINE
PROGRAM
Serving the Health

Will You Pay More for
Medicare Part B in 2018?
The Medicare Part B standard monthly
premium for 2018 is $134, the same as
last year. However, many people with
Medicare will see a 23 percent increase
in their premium. Why is that? It is due
to a law that has allowed many people
to pay less than the full premium the
last two years. This law prevents
people's premiums from going up more
than the increase in their Social
Security benefits. Since there has been
little or no increase in these benefits the
last two years, most people were
paying less than $134 last year. The
average premium for most people last
year was $109. For 2018, there has
been a 2 percent increase in Social
Security benefits, but many will not see
any increase in their benefit check. This
is because the increase will go toward
paying the $134 Medicare premium.
People with high incomes will continue
to pay more for Medicare, between
$187.50 and $428.60, based on their
income level. People with limited
income and assets may qualify for a
program that will pay their premium.
Trained SHINE (Serving Health
Insurance Needs of Everyone... on

They offer free, confidential
counseling on all aspects of health
insurance to anyone on Medicare.

Join us to discuss A Passage to
India by E.M. Foster. Copies of
the book are available at the
Watertown Free Public Library. E.
M. Forster's 1924 masterpiece, A
Passage to India, is a novel that
tackles the thorny notions of preconceptions
and misconceptions through characters'
desire to overcome the barrier that divides
East and West in colonial India. Here we see
the limits of liberal tolerance, good
intentions, and good will as we try to sort
through the common problems that exist
between two very different cultures. But
Forster's India is a country where the
English and Indians stare at each other
across a cultural divide and a history of
imbalanced power relations, mutual
suspicion, and ill will. A fresh reader must
wonder whether connection is possible at
all.
New members are always welcome!
SENIOR CENTER SNOW POLICY
If Watertown public schools are
cancelled for inclement weather, all
Senior Center programs, and shopping bus
runs, are cancelled. If school opening is delayed, the
morning shopping bus run is cancelled, and Senior
Center programs maybe cancelled at the instructor's
discretion, so call before coming over: (617) 972-6490.
Staff members will be available during regular business
hours. School cancellation information is broadcast on
local cable, radio and network TV.
Remember, safety is your first priority. Use your own
good judgment to decide if you should go out in bad
weather.
