Start your holiday shopping early with a visit to the Friends' Holiday Boutique scheduled for November 8th and 9th from 10-3. Many thanks to everyone who donated gently used holiday items and giftware for the sale. Proceeds will help support the Senior Center. Medicare Open Enrollment continues until December 7th. Please call us to make an appointment with the SHINE counselor to discuss changes to your plan or prescription drug coverage. This is a free service. Join us on November 14th when we welcome Dick Flavin, Boston Red Sox Senior Ambassador and Poet Laureate, who will bring his tales from the favorite home team to the Senior Center. We have some new additions to the Council on Aging Board and staff. We welcome Arlene Smith and Janet McCullough to the Board and express our thanks to outgoing Board members Linda Moffitt and Alice Wadden for their service. We have hired Marjorie Wayne as the new Program Services Assistant. Margie will be helping us with the transportation program and other events. She is a great addition to the team. SNAP GAP: ,.,, • Y =" Register for Food Stamps if you have MassHealth The SNAP GAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as "food stamps,") refers to people who are receiving MassHealth and likely eligible for SNAP, but aren't receiving benefits. More than 40% of low-income elders eligible for the federal are not on the program. A recent study by Mass General Hospital found that seniors with poor nutrition are at greater risk for health conditions like chronic heart disease, depression, diabetes, and asthma. Another study showed that access to SNAP benefits reduces the likelihood of admission to a nursing home by 23%. Under federal rules, elderly or disabled people can claim out-of-pocket medical expenses as a deduction to raise their SNAP benefit. In addition to insurance and any hospital or doctor costs, you can claim out-of-pocket costs like vitamins, eye glasses, hearing aids, over the counter" medicine chest items, and mileage from driving to doctors, service dog expenses, and pharmacies. Elders can also use private or public housing costs, utility costs, and dependent care costs to raise their SNAP benefits.
