It's Summer! And we hope you will stop in the Senior Center to enjoy the air conditioning and take
Oi part in one or more of our many programs and activities. Take a look in our lending library for a
new beach read, stop by and play a few rounds of Cribbage, Whist, Bridge or Rummikub, test your
\: skill at Chess, attend an exercise class, or drop in for the Thursday movie. If you enjoy singing
considerjoining the Mellowtones who meet Friday afternoons. Everything is listed on our calendar
on page 7. We look forward to seeing you!
We also hope you will join us for a special presentation about the Opioid Epidemic and its impact
on the family. District Attorney Marian Ryan will be joining us on July 25th during our Coffee Time with the Police Chief.
You don't want to miss it.
July 1 st begins the new Fiscal Year for the Town and on behalf of all of us at the Senior Center, I would like to take a
moment to express thanks to the Honorable Town Councilors, the Town Manager and the Council on Aging Board for
supporting the Fiscal Year 2018 Council on Aging Budget. The staff and I look forward to adding new programs and
continuing to provide essential services to help Watertown's older residents age well in the community. Thank you for
your support!
Please remember to look in on your neighbors as the temperatures climb and contact us if we can be of any help. We're

AUGUST 16—Boston Duck Tour / Senior Shuttle. The Watertown & Belmont Senior Center's Duck Tour of

AUGUST 30—Salem Trip / Senior Shuttle. Join us for a talk on Salem before heading out for a tour of some of
Salem's sites. Details to follow.
SEPTEMBER 22—Scallop Festival & JFK Museum. Join us as we head to the Cape for the annual Scallop
festival & fair. After we head to the JFK Museum where they are celebrating his 100th Birthday. Leave: 8:30

OCTOBER 17—Indian Princess Riverboat. Foliage trip to western MA for a cruise aboard the Indian
Princess. Next it's lunch at the Point Breeze on Webster Lake. We end the day with a stop at the Foppema Farm.

make bookmarks from beautiful paper. The

FIRE ALARMS AND CARBON MONOXIDE
The Senior SAFE program provides fire & life safety
education for seniors. As part of this The Watertown Fire
Department will conduct an in -home visit and provide and
install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to those in
need. To qualify for the install you must be 65 or older
and own and occupy the home.
Call the Watertown Fire Prevention Bureau at

services are free whether you have
Original Medicare or a Medicare
Advantage plan, such as an HMO.
Some of the FREE services include:
• Colorectal cancer screening
(including colonoscopies)
• Mammograms
• Pap tests and pelvic exams
• Bone mass measurements
• Cardiovascular screening
• Hepatitis C screening
• Diabetes screening lab tests
• Flu and pneumonia shots
• Alcohol misuse screening and
counseling
• Depression screening
• Obesity screening and counseling
There are rules which state when and
how often Medicare will pay for the
above services. For a complete list of
preventive services, go to
www.medicare.gov or see a SHINE
counselor. Trained SHINE counselors
offer free, confidential counseling on
all aspects of Medicare and related
health insurance programs.

accommodate new riders.

� Question: "How do I
go about finding
housing in Watertown?"
Marina: "I have many seniors coming to the Senior
Center for assistance with their housing situations.
Some of them were renting apartments in
Watertown for many years. Due to recent
retirement, loss of job, change in family or medical
condition, they find themselves in a situation when
they cannot afford paying the same rent
anymore. Seniors come to the Senior Center to get
help with finding a subsidized place in Watertown or
nearby town. Others are looking for information on
assisted living or nursing homes for themselves or
for their loved one."
If you find yourself or your loved one in a similar
situation, please call the Senior Center and make an
appointment with me. During our meeting, we will
discuss the best options for your individual case.

7/20 Hacksaw Ridge —Based on a true story
of conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss,
who saved 75 men in Okinawa, during the
bloodiest battle of WWII, without firing a
single shot. Believing that the war was just
but killing was nevertheless wrong, he was
the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front
lines without a weapon. As an army medic Doss single-
handedly evacuated the wounded near enemy lines,
braving enemy fire and putting his own life on the line.
He was the first conscientious objector to ever win the
Congressional Medal of Honor. Cast: Andrew Garfield,
Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey. 2016 R 131 mins.
7/27 Moana—This aquatic animated tale
follows the journey of Moana Waialiki, a
plucky Polynesian teen who sets out on a
long and perilous ocean voyage in search of
