Many people may be away on vacation but the Senior Center is busy! Our Thursday Movie
Matinee has been very popular and our games groups continue to grow as folks look to
escape the heat. If you haven't been in lately, come by and take a look at the new Garden we
are creating near the back deck with a generous Marshall Home Fund grant. Bring your laptop
and surf the web on our WiFi, or if you like to sing, join the Mellowtones, our choral group that
meets on Friday afternoons. They are always welcoming new singers and they perform at our
Harvest, Holiday and Birthday parties during the year. Everything is listed on our calendar on
Page 7. We look forward to seeing you.
We are pleased to welcome Kathy Cunningham to our team as the new Coordinator of the Watertown Food Pantry. She
brings a wealth of experience in food service from her years with the Newton Public Schools. The Food Pantry is
located on the lower level of the Belmont -Watertown United Methodist Church at 80 Mount Auburn Street and is open to
Watertown residents on Tuesdays from 10:00-11:30 AM and on Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 PM. Kathy is supported by a
long-standing group of volunteers. If you are interested in helping or if you are in need of food, call the Senior Center for
more information.
Please remember to look in on your neighbors as the temperatures climb and contact us if we can be of any help. We're
here for you.

THE
SHINE
PROGRAM
Serving the Health
Insurance Needs
of Everyone
Delaying Medicare
Enrollment
Most people first become eligible to
enroll in Medicare during the 7 month
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
surrounding their 65t" birthday. If you
are still working and covered through
your employer group health plan, you
may delay enrolling in Medicare
without penalty. This also applies if
you are covered through your
spouse's active employment.
However, once employment ends,
other coverage, such as COBRA, will
not prevent the penalty.
If you are covered by a plan through
the Health Connector, you can drop it
and enroll in Medicare during your
IEP. Otherwise, you will be subject to
a delay in Medicare enrollment and
premium penalty. Also, any subsidies
or premium tax credits you've been
getting will end with Medicare
enrollment. If you missed enrolling
during your IEP, help may be available.
You should contact Social Security
before September 30, 2017.
For further assistance about this or
any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE
Program. Trained SHINE volunteers
offer free, confidential counseling on
all aspects of Medicare and related
health and drug insurance programs.
To schedule a SHINE appointment,
call the Watertown Senior Center at
(617) 972-6490.
