He has played at concerts, festivals, colleges, libraries and pubs all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as his native Ireland, including a stint for one month in Seoul, South Korea. Whether playing a plaintive air on the tin whistle or singing and playing rousing traditional songs to the accompaniment of the guitar or the bodhran (Irish drum), Tom will captivate all with his lively program of Irish culture. (I► A � �� FACTS Older adults are particularly vulnerable to cold weather and are at an increased risk of developing hypothermia- the result of below -normal body temperature. Be aware of the danger signals: puffy face, shivering, confusion, stiff muscles, forget- fulness, sleepy & hard to wake, stomach is cold to the touch, trembling arms or legs. Prevention tips: Dress in several layers of loose -fitting warm clothing; make sure the temperature in the room is adjusted appro- priately, no lower than 65 degrees; wear a hat, mittens, & scarf to conserve body heat; use a hot water bottle, heating pad, or electric blanket to help keep your bed warm. There are also some medications that make older adults more susceptible to hypothermia. PAGE 4 WATERTOWN SENIOR NEWS FEBRUARY 2016 Can I Still Change My Medicare Plan? The annual Medicare Open Enrollment period ended December 7. You may still be able to change plans during 2016. Newly Available: Medicare's 5-Star Special Enrollment Period You have an opportunity to enroll in a top -rated (5-Star) plan, once during the year. This can be done at any time through November 30, with the enrollment effective the first of the following month. The Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO plans have achieved the 5-Star rating for 2016. You can enroll in one of these plans, as long as you meet the plan's eligibility requirements. If you are currently in a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, this new enrollment will automatically disenroll you from your previous plan. For those with a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO): Between January 1 and February 14 each year, anyone with a Medicare Advantage plan may drop it and switch to Orig- inal Medicare. If you drop your Medicare Advantage plan during this period, you will be able to join a Medicare Pre- scription Drug Plan to add drug coverage. Your Original Medicare coverage and your prescription drug coverage will begin the first day of the month after your enrollment. You may also add a supplement (Medigap) at this time. For those with Prescription Advantage or getting "Extra Help" paving for prescription drugs: You can change your Medicare Advantage plan or drug plan anytime during the year. Those with Prescription Ad- vantage can do this only once each year. Those with "Extra Help" can change every month. Trained SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Everyone ... on Medicare) volunteers can help you! They offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare. Don't need all the sale or free items? If you use your coupons for great deals or free items think about donating the extras to those less fortunate than you. The Senior Center will accept your coupons and food donations to deliver to the Watertown Food Pantry. Think how much this will help a family, to know that they can save money and buy more items because of your donations of coupons. It can give them a sense of inde- pendence to be able to help themselves. Volunteers, trained at an IRS certified program sponsored by AARP, will provide tax assistance by appointment. The volunteers are not able to prepare returns that include income from rental property, trusts, partnerships, or businesses. These returns should be handled by a professional tax preparer. Complex returns will be referred to private tax preparers. While there is no fee for this service, donations to the Senior Center are gratefully accepted. Appointments are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Call the Senior Center at 617-972-6490 AFTER February 1st to make an appointment.
