When Can You Enroll in a Medigap Plan?
Medigap plans are health insurance plans that provide extra protection beyond Medicare by
filling in some of the "gaps" in Medicare coverage. In Massachusetts, these plans allow contin-
uous open enrollment. You must have Medicare A and B to enroll, and cannot be enrolled in a
Medicare Advantage plan. Anyone who is eligible may enroll or change plans or coverage lev-
els at any time, with changes effective the first of the following month. Note that Medigap pol-
icies do not cover prescription drugs, which are covered separately under Medicare Part D.
In Massachusetts, seven insurers offer the same two Medigap plans, Core and Supplement 1.
The Core plan pays some of the co -pays for Medicare covered services, while the Supplement
covers all the deductibles and co -pays for these services. This means that a Medigap policy will
generally pay only when Medicare approves payment. With a Medigap policy, you are free to choose
any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare and you do not need referrals to see a specialist.
For assistance with choosing a Medigap plan or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Pro-
gram. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare
and related health insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local
Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then
press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A
volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.

COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD
The COA Board will meet next at 5:30 pm,
Wednesday, June 8 at the Watertown Senior
Center, 31 Marshall St.
THE SENIOR CENTER BOOK CLUB
WHEN: 9:30 a m. Wednesday, June 15
to discuss Stella Bain by Anita Shreve.
Copies of the book are available at the
Watertown Free Public Library. When
an American woman, Stella
A N I TA Bain, is found suffering
S H UV V E from severe shell shock in
` . an exclusive garden in
London, surgeon August
.;,,
L& Bridge and his wife selfless-
ly agree to take her in.
A gesture of goodwill turns into some-
thing more as Bridge quickly develops a
clinical interest in his houseguest. Stella
had been working as a nurse's aide near
the front, but she can't remember any-
thing prior to four months earlier when
she was found wounded on a French
battlefield.
In a narrative that takes us from
London to America and back again,
Shreve has created an engrossing and
wrenching tale about love and the
meaning of memory, set against the
haunting backdrop of a war that de-
stroyed an entire generation.

SUMMER SAFETY
As the warmer weather approaches keep in mind these tips from the
Watertown Police Department:
• Keep your car doors locked at all times
• Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if you
leave for a short time, lock your doors.
• Make your home look occupied, and make it difficult to break in.
• If you are going to be away for a length of time, consider connecting some lamps to automat-
ic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day.
• Keep your garage door closed and locked.
• Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or flyers build up while you are away.
• Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them
regularly.
• Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time.
And remember; please do not hesitate to contact the police to report a crime
or any suspicious activity.
