improve your digestive health.

1/9 -COOL HAND LUKE Luke
Jackson (Paul Newman) is sen-
tenced to a stretch on a southern
chain gang after he's arrested for
drunkenly decapitating parking
meters. While the avowed ambi-
tion of the captain (Strother Martin)
is for each prisoner to "get their
mind right," it soon becomes obvi-
ous that Luke is not about to kow-
tow to anybody. When challenged
to a fistfight by fellow inmate Drag -
line (George Kennedy), Luke simp-
ly refuses to give
up, even though
he's brutally beat-
en. Luke knows
how to win at pok-

cards, by using
his smarts and
playing it cool.
Luke also figures

he's caught, he simply escapes
again. Soon, Luke becomes a sym-
bol of hope and resilience to the
other men in the prison camp and a
symbol of rebelliousness that must
be stamped out.
1/16-SEARCHING FOR SUGAR
MAN Decades after Detroit singer -
songwriter Rodriguez disappeared
following the commercial failure of
his two critically praised records in
the 1970s, two fans from South Af-
rica, where Rodri-
guez was a huge
hit, try to track
. down their idol. In
the early 1970s,
asa, Sixto Rodriguez
was a Detroit
folksinger who
SEAACHINIG FOR
SUGAR MAZY had a short-lived
recording career
with only two well received but non -
selling albums. Unknown to Rodri-
guez, his musical story continued in
South Africa where he became a
pop music icon and inspiration for
generations. Long rumored there to
be dead by suicide, a few fans in
the 1990s decided to seek out the
truth of their hero's fate. What fol-
lows is a bizarrely heartening story
in which they found far more in their
quest than they ever hoped, while a
Detroit construction laborer discov-
ered that his lost artistic dreams
came true after all.
1/23-HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN
A drama centered on the romance
between Ernest Hemingway (Clive
Owen) and WWII correspondent
Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman),
Hemingway's inspiration for For
Whom the Bell
Tolls and the only
woman who ever
asked for a di-
vorce from the
writer. A 1936
meeting between
novelist Ernest
Hemingway and
war correspondent
Martha Gellhorn sparks a nine-
year relationship dominated by a
volatile romance that nearly rivaled
the combat zones into which they
threw themselves in Spain, China,
and World War II.
1/30-THE GREAT GATSBY It's
the spring of 1922, and wide-eyed
Midwesterner Nick Carraway
(Tobey Maguire) has just moved to
New York City. Settling into a
home next door to wealthy Jay
Gatsby (Leonardo
DiCaprio), Carra-
way is fascinated
by the elaborate
parties held at his

bay, Carraway's
cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan)
flounders in her marriage to philan-
dering aristocrat Tom Buchanan
(Joel Edgerton). Inspired by the
Gatsby's wild parties and the lives
of the wealthy elite, Carraway be-
gins putting pen to paper as it be-
comes clear that his cousin and
the millionaire share a complicated
romantic past that remains unre-
solved.

to discuss CUTTING FOR STONE
by Abraham Verghese
Here's o brief synopsis: Moving from Ad-
dis Ababa to New York City and back
again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgetta-
ble story of love and betrayal, medicine
and ordinary miracles and two brothers
whose fates are forever intertwined. Mar-
ion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers
born of secret union
between a beautiful s
Indian nun and a
brash British surgeon.
Orphaned by their or STONE
mother's death and
their father's disap-
pearance, bound to-
gether by a preter-
natural connection
and a shared fascination with medicine,
the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers
on the brink of revolution.
