A Safe Driving Program
The town of Watertown and the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) are committed
to keeping drivers safe. In an effort to make our roads safer, the RMV will pre-
sent "Shifting Gears, "a free, hour-long program designed to educate and en-
courage older drivers to be the best driver possible. This free workshop will be
presented:

WHERE: Watertown Senior Center, 31 Marshall St.
A representative from the RMV will present the program and highlight issues fac-
ing elder drivers. The program includes safe driving tips, information on how
age affects one's driving, and identifies the most frequent collisions for elder
drivers. A list of warning signs of unsafe driving is provided to help drivers mini-
mize their driving risk. The benefits of not driving a vehicle and suggestions of
ways to preserve one's independence without a license will also be discussed.
Call the Senior Center at 617-972-6490 to register.

Medicare and Mental Health Benefits
Starting in January 2014, Original Medicare increased its payment for most outpatient mental health services to the
same level as other Medicare Part B services, 80 percent of the Medicare approved amount. You or your supple-
mental insurance must pay the remaining 20 percent coinsurance. Medicare Advantage plans have to cover the same
services as Original Medicare. However, your plan will likely require you to see an in -network mental health care
provider. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, contact your plan to find out about your copayments. Original
Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans continue to provide coverage for inpatient mental health services as usual.
You can get mental health services in an outpatient hospital program, a doctor's or therapist's office or a clinic. Medi-
care will help pay for outpatient mental health services you receive from general practitioners, nurse practitioners,
physicians' assistants, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, or clinical nurse specialists, as long
as they are Medicare providers. Psychiatrists are more likely than any other type of provider to not accept Medicare.
Medicare covers yearly screenings to detect depression. Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D) must cover almost
all antidepressant, antipsychotic, and anticonvulsant prescription drugs used to treat mental health conditions.
Remember. You should ask any provider if they take Medicare before you begin receiving services!
For assistance with understanding and accessing your Medicare benefits, you can call the Watertown Senior Center at
617-972-6490 and ask for a SHINE appointment. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all
aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare. You can also reach a SHINE counselor by telephone. Call 1-800-
AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name
and number. A volunteer counselor will call you back, as soon as possible.

J U N E 2014 WATERTOWN SENIOR NEWS PAGE 8
Two Health Living Programs are being offered at the Senior Center this Summer:
The ancient discipline of Tai Chi combines agile steps, joint safe exercise and mental strength to improve mobility,
breathing, and relaxation in ways that help you feel greater control over your daily life. It's a joint safe way for people of
all ages to enjoy life and meet new friends, while taking control of your physical, emotional and mental health. Classes
meet for one hour twice a week for eight weeks.
WHEN: 12:30 - 1:30 Tuesday & Thursday from June 10 through July 31 Healthy Living workshops are
offered through Springwell free
of charge to seniors who would
like to improve their health
and well-being.
Is living with the stress of caregiving preventing you from really living? In the six weekly classes, adults facing the
unique challenges of being a caregiver will develop a wealth of self -care tools to reduce personal stress, change nega-
tive self -talk, communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers, communicate more ef-
fectively in challenging situations, recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings, and make tough
caregiving decisions. Learn to thrive and not just survive while caring for a family member or friend!
WHEN: 6 Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30 from July 9 through August 13
Don't let the lack of transportation or a caretaker for your loved one keep you from signing up. Funds are
available thanks to the Tufts Foundation. Call the Senior Center at 616-972-6490 for more info & to sign up.
