We will be discussing LITTLE FIRES
EVERYWHERE, by Celeste Ng. Set in
wealthy Shaker Heights, Ohio, in the 1990s, it's the
story of how two very different families both come
together and break apart. Shaker Heights was/is a
very wealthy planned community with rules
governing everything down to the colors of the
houses. Themes of class, wealth and privilege,
individuality vs. community, all play out against one
another in the lives of these two tightly -bound
families. "Please note the change in date this
month (from 2nd to 3rd Wednesday) because of the
Nov. 11 Veterans Day holiday.

Community Voices: Cur pets
= r,
By Dolly Grandinetti
When my son Fred was a little boy he was afraid of dogs. When I saw him run into the street to get away from a
big dog I decided the family should get one as a pet.
We got our first dog, Noodles, at The Buddy Dog Humane Societyin 1968. Noodles was a year old and the only
brown chihuahua in a mix of white ones. She had a black spot over one of her eyes. Noodles was very quiet
and her favorite food was boiled hot dogs chopped up into small pieces.
Our next dog, Amy, we bought at Debbie's PetLand in 1981. She was named after the woman who sold her to
us. Amy was a Japanese Chin with white and black coloring. Amy always scratched at my son's bedroom win-
dow whenever she wanted to go outside. She loved to roll in the freshly mowed grass which turned her white
and black coloring green. Amy loved my husband and when he passed in 1996 she mourned for him.
Following Amy was Swee'pea which we also bought at Debbie's Pet Landin 1998. The owner told us Swee'pea
was a girl until a friend of my son looked a little more closely. Swee'pea was actually a boy! Swee'pea was a Pe-
kingese who loved to go on long walks with my children. He was also very possessive about his food. He'd let
you know not to get to close when he started eating. Swee'pea also liked to open his own Christmas presents by
shredding the wrapping a strand at a time.
After Swee'pea we adopted Jake at The North East Animal She/terin 2013. My sons were looking at the dogs
who were in their cages. Jake, who is a dachshund and terrier mix, went up to Dom. He rolled on his back
waiting to get his belly rubbed. That's when Dom decided this was the one to adopt. Jake does not like to be
left alone and we take him with us whenever possible. When I'm napping Jake is right by side. We can be taking
Jake for a walk and he will suddenly stop. He'll give us a big smile knowing he was rescued.
love all of my dogs!

Lear Watertown Seniors,
Where can we get senior services for me and my elder relative(s)?
Calling the Watertown Senior Center is a good start and we also recommend
contacting Springwell, the Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) and
Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for Watertown. Springwell is a state and federal
subsidized non-profit agency located in Waltham, that provides a host of sen-
ior services such as home delivered meals, personal care, home health care,
caregiver support, information and referral, and other in -home assistance for
Watertown residents and those in surrounding towns. Springwell offers af-
6" 5;' fordable services to clients with lower incomes and offers private pay options
69 too_ Springwell can be reached by calling (617) 926-4100.
What can I do if I suspect that my next door neighbor can't take care of him/herself
anymore? Sometimes we get calls from community residents concerned with a senior's well-
being. Please call the Watertown Senior Center at (617) 972-6490 for information and to share your
concerns. Signs can be severe depression, malnutrition, declining self -care, unsafe driving, acting
disoriented and confused, exhibiting bruises, commenting about frequent falls, or financial exploita-
tion and scams. You can also report your concerns directly and anonymously by calling the Toll -
Free Elder Abuse and Self -Neglect 24/7 Hotline at (800) 922-2275. Thank you for helping us to
keep seniors safe.

Online banking is more advanced and secure
than ever, experts say. And if banking
research is accurate, a growing number of
boomers and seniors are preferring to
manage their money from the couch.
Banking online has added perks: no need for
physical challenges to keep you from paying a bill
and freedom to conduct transactions anytime and
from anywhere where you have internet
connection.
You can start by learning more about online
banking by watching the series of videos
developed by the National Council on Aging:
https: /www.readysetbank.org/
Why to consider online banking:
Time and Place Flexibility
You get flexibility and convenience. Online
banking allows you to view your account
balances, pay your bills, locate ATMs, transfer
funds and even deposit checks all while on the
go, 24/7. If you can't get to a branch during
service hours, online banking gives you
alternative ways to handle your banking needs.
Accessible from the smart phone
Ideally, a computer, laptop or tablet with updated
security software. If depositing checks from home
interests you, a scanner could come in handy. In
some cases, you can use your smartphone for
depositing checks, too. We will discuss the latter
in detail further down.
Access to Account Management Tools
If your financial institution also provides personal
financial management tools, you'll be able to
manage all your banking, credit and financial
accounts in one place at your favorite bank or
credit union.
Online banking Web sites are protected using
end -to -end strong encryption technology, which
ensures that even if you are using an unsecured
wireless access point, the information and data
being transferred between your laptop and the
bank is completely encrypted and therefore not
viewable by a malicious person in between.

What is a Health Care Proxy?
As a competent adult, starting at 18 years old,
you have the right to direct your health care

A good place to start to make your plan is to
choose a trusted person called a Health Care
Agent or "Agent". An Agent is your advocate
with the power to make health care decisions
on your behalf if you are unable to make
decisions yourself. You appoint an Agent in a
legal document called a Health Care Proxy.
