RE: Ocean Edge Resort LLC request: Modification of Special Permit #2060-P as amended on May 27, 2020
Dear Planning Board Members,
I want Ocean Edge to succeed. I just don't want to hear them. Turn down the music -the amplified
music - is what I ask. Because of COVID49 conditions, last year Ocean Edge came before this Planning
Board and asked to be excused from the limited number of times they can have tented events on the
front lawn. The town recognized that their functions with amplified music on their front lawn aren't
limited to tented affairs. After a debate, they were granted a one-off waiver to the rules, and they were
allowed a limited extension to their tent use and a limited number of amplified music events, over the
summer and fall seasons.
They are back again asking for extended events on the front lawn. Family Fun on the Front Lawn of
Oceans Edge is what they advertised on television and print media. How many more years do their
neighbors have to be subject to their loud events?
Yes, I know they want to make money, but why must the town and their neighbors have to bend and
weave year after year to their business ideas?
This is the same corporation that wants to build an additional conference complex at 2851 Main Street,
the former Nickerson property located between my home and Ocean Edge proper. This is a Residential
neighborhood. They must remember that.
When the rules were made years ago for the quota of tented affairs on the front lawn of Ocean Edge, I
believe it was it was to limit the impact on their neighbors and the town. Those rules were before they
built their large ballroom, giving them more indoor options. The outdoor speakers have improved over
these last some thirty years and have made their amplified music events intolerable for those that live
near the property. The sound, the music carries. And to say the music must end at 10 PM — isn't enough,
for the music goes on for hours and hours, driving me off my own outdoor deck, forcing me indoors, or
just leaving home all together, to give myself a break from the party noise. Leaving home wasn't an
option last year with COVID.
Last year, when I just couldn't take anymore, I did call Ocean Edge. The General Manager's reply, "It's a
wedding, you know." I don't want to complain, and I shouldn't have to call. They should know the music
is too loud. I don't want to ruin the party — but I live here too. Keep the music down from the start.
Respect your neighbors.
What happens at Ocean Edge impacts my world. During these unusual circumstances of a pandemic, we
make allowances. So, when their amplified music drove me off my outdoor deck and into the house, I
accepted it, because I told myself for now it will happen again tomorrow, and the day after that. But this
cannot be an annual thing left unchecked.
Resorts like this make noise and traffic. But this is too much. I agree with limiting the number of times
Ocean Edge can have amplify music on the front lawn —but the volume level must be lower. Period.
Please help the neighbors of Ocean Edge.
Sincerely,
Jan Moore
