Hause, Acting City Manager I Administrative Services Director Via: Brian Haworth, Assistant to the City Manager I Economic Development Manager By: Chelsea Pitcher, Management Analyst SUBJECT: PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION ACTIONS -SPECIAL MEETING OF JANUARY 22, 2014 RECOMMENDATION: The City Council is requested to receive and file actions of the January 22, 2014 special Public Arts Commission (Commission) meeting. BACKGROUND: On January 22, 2014 artist Carole Oueijan (Oueijan) p resented the Commission with ten preliminary tile mural design sketches for five Rosemead Boulevard directory monuments. Furthermore, the Commission approved the FY 2014-15 Public Art Annual Plan (Annual Plan) for City Council presentation. ANALYSIS: The following is a summary of actions taken at the February 5, 2014 Commission meeting: 1. ROLL CALL: Present: Absent: Excused : Commissioner-Vice -Chair Ho, Keelin, Kim, Chair Larsen, Rachford, Zhao Commissioner -None Commissioner-Hepler City Council February 18, 2014 Page 2 of 3 2. CONSENT CALENDAR The Commission approved the minutes from their meeting of December 4, 2013. 3. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A APPROVAL OF THE FY 2014-15 PUBLIC ART ANNUAL PLAN The Commission unanimously approved Annual Plan recommendations and its implementation schedule, which is aligned with the 2014-15 Fiscal Year. B. CAMELLIA FESTIVAL OUTREACH STRATEGY Chair Larsen presented a public outreach activity to solicit community input on the Arts in Public Places Program at the Camellia Festival on February 23, from 3-5 p.m. 4. NEW BUSINESS A REVIEW OF DESIGN SKETCHES FOR ROSEMEAD PROJECT TILE MURALS The Commission was requested to review ten preliminary design sketches for tile murals to be installed on Rosemead Boulevard directory monuments, and select five for further refinement and City Council approval. Oueijan recommended the Commission select design sketches entitled "Embracing the Nature," "Festivities," "What We Created," The Bandstand," and "A District of Distinguished Schools." The Commission approved Oueijan's recommended design sketches with further refinements to "Festivities" and "A District of Distinguished Schools." Design sketches for Rosemead Boulevard directory monuments were approved 6-0. 5. REPORTS FROM CITY STAFF None. 6. COMMUNICATIONS Assistant to the City Manager Haworth announced a special Commission and City Council meeting on February 5, 2014 to discuss the development of a future percent for art ordinance. City Council February 18, 2014 Page 3 of 3 Consultant Elwood provided an update on the progress of Rosemead Project sculptures, mosaic pavers and text art. 7.
