MISSION STATEMENT: To support and advocate for older adults and their families by
providing programs, services and resources that promote independent living and quality of life.
Holiday Closing Notes:
Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those
who had been enslaved in the US. It is commemorated on the
anniversary of the June 19, 1865 announcement by Union
Army General Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from
slavery in Texas.
Though not a federal holiday, in 2020 Governor Baker added Massachu-
setts to the long list of states that observe this day.
Because the actual date falls on a Saturday this year, the COA will be
closed on Friday, June 18th.

Put on your Walkin’ Shoes!
Try out the new paved walking circuit at Drummer Boy Park. Check out the beautiful
benches that have been installed at either end of the circuit. A walk around the

exercise venue. Dogs must be on a leash.
Once you have visited, we’d love to hear your thoughts about other ways the park can be made a better

Love, Limits and Learning:
Container Planting
Presented by Dr. Margaret Rappaport,
Master Gardener
Gardening is love; all encompassing. Gardening is
a great teacher; your capabilities limit what your
imagination suggests. Gardening is learning; the
more understanding you bring to the soil, plants
and environments of the garden, the better.
Dr. Rappaport is presently interested in container
gardening and includes the belief that the genera-
tive response one feels when giving help to growing
plants is meaningful. Containers allow for experi-
mentation with shapes, sizes and plantings. This
activity is innately interesting and the results are
rewarding. Exploration of locations for containers,
inside and outside is a source of play and fun.
Please see the Channel 18 schedule on page 7 for
air times.
Ticks: One Bite Can Change Your Life

A Message from Stephanie Lattanzio, RN-BSN
Public Health and Wellness Town Nurse, VNA of Cape Cod
Home visits will occur on Mondays.
Dehydration
Dehydration occurs when the body loses water and essential salts. Older adults are particularly prone to
dehydration due to a decline in total body fluid, lower thirst response, decreased kidney function, other
health conditions and certain medications.
Dehydration is more likely if someone is experiencing nausea or diarrhea, exposed to heat and humidity
or engaging in strenuous physical activity.
Symptoms of dehydration include: thirst, less frequent urination, dry skin, fatigue, headache, dizziness,
confusion, dry mouth, increased heart rate and breathing.
Try these tips from the National Institute on Aging to get enough fluids:
❖ Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink water or other fluids.
❖ Take sips of water, milk or juice between bites during meals.
❖ Have a cup of low fat/low sodium soup or broth to increase fluids.
❖ Drink a glass of water before exercise or heat exposure.
❖ Do not stop drinking fluids due to concerns of urinary control; speak with your doctor about
treatment.
❖ If you have been told to limit fluids due to a health condition, please speak with your doctor
about your fluid goal and how to avoid dehydration.
❖ If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation (no more than one drink daily for women
and two for men).
❖ If you find it difficult to consume enough water, try adding flavor with fresh or frozen fruit.
Taking steps to prevent dehydration can help you feel better and prevent this dangerous condition.
We have waited long enough for summer on Cape Cod and I hope everyone can enjoy it to the fullest!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“A perfect summer day is when the sun is
shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are
singing, and the lawnmower is broken.” –
James Dent
So what do we think about when the month of June
rolls in? There are quite a few pleasant things that
come to mind, at least for me and for probably tons
of kids who have spent the last ten months in the
classroom, excepting the pandemic. No school!! Off
the top of my head I usually think of June 6, 1944,
D-Day and the beginning of the end of World War
II. June 13th is the day my twin grandsons Peter
and Joey were born twenty-five years ago. Also
celebrated on June 13th is the Feast of St. Anthony
of Padua, noted by his contemporaries for his
powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture,
and undying love and devotion to the poor and the
sick, he was one of the most quickly canonized
saints in church history...he is also the patron saint
of lost things. So, if you have misplaced your glass-
es, car keys, or lost your way, say a little prayer to
St. Anthony and who knows, good things may
happen.
I like to think of the arrival of the “Boys of Sum-
mer”, talented college kids who spend their
summer days here attracting major league scouts.
“Take me out to the ballgame”…..go Whitecaps!!
Let’s see, June 14 you will probably see an abun-
dance of flags being flown to commemorate Flag
Day. The United States Army was formed also on
June 14, 1775. We have a new annual state holiday
on June 19 this year, known as Juneteenth, to
"recognize the continued need to ensure racial free-
dom and equality." The Battle of Bunker Hill took
place on June 17, 1775 and either Colonel Israel
Putnam of Connecticut, or Colonel William
Prescott of Massachusetts made the famous state-
ment, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their
eyes.” Since there appears to be some historical
disagreement as to who gets the credit, I’m casting
my ballot for “My Cousin Vinny” from Passaic, New
Jersey. It’s worth a shot!
While the Battle of Bunker Hill was raging,
Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty was
arriving in New York harbor and on June 25, 1876,
Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the 7th
Cavalry met their demise at The Battle of Little
Bighorn in Montana. To close out the month of
June, let us not forget that on June 30, 1859,
French acrobat Blondin crossed over the Niagara
Falls on a tightrope.
Now you are probably wondering, after reading all
these “important” June dates, which one will stick
out in our minds? Let me help you with one which I
have not yet mentioned and you will not want to
forget. On June 30, 2021, your “Current Resident
Recycle Permit”... aka, Dump Sticker will expire, so
stop worrying about Little Bighorn, or Bunker Hill
and hurry to renew your beach and dump stickers.
And don’t forget to cast your ballot for my Cousin
Vinny!

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS
We are now offering medical rides from our local area to as far as Hyannis
for routine doctor’s appointments Mondays through Fridays. We regret
that we cannot accommodate riders who are having procedures.
There will be 1 ride per day, with 1 client getting the ride to/from their
appointment. All safety precautions, such as social distancing, hygiene protocol
and cleaning/disinfecting, will be strictly reinforced. Due to these protocols, our
ability to offer rides will be considerably reduced, so we encourage you to have
an alternative method of transportation available. Appointments should be
booked for times between 9:00am and 2:00pm.
Please call the COA at 508-896-2737 as soon as you make an appointment
or at least four business days (Monday thru Friday) in advance so that we
can schedule your ride. Please notify the COA if you can’t keep your
appointment so we can notify our driver. Donations are accepted for this service.
Our van is wheelchair-accessible.
