July 2021
MISSION STATEMENT: To support and advocate for older adults and their families by
providing programs, services and resources that promote independent living and quality of life.
Although we have been working in and out of the Senior
Center building since March of 2020, we are happy to say
that we can begin to welcome you for certain activities
and needs. Please read through the pages of this
newsletter for more information. Unfortunately, in-
person exercise classes will not be resuming until this fall.
I want to acknowledge that your COA Staff has gone above and beyond to make sure your
needs were met, and we are happy that going forward we will be able to interact with you
personally. All staff have been vaccinated.
Cape COAST (Councils on Aging Serving Together) Directors have been meeting faithful-
ly via Zoom every month to help each other plan on staying connected to our senior
population in a different way. We have brainstormed, strategized, and shared ideas and
resources. We have also met monthly with the Barnstable County Department of Human
Services to get updates on the COVID-19 pandemic. As we all work with our individual
town administrator and Select Board, there is no one-size-fits-all strategy for scaling up
operations. The common denominator is that we are all doing the very best we can to
safely meet the needs of our older adults in our towns.
Beginning Tuesday, July 6th, we will be open to the public every Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday, just like Town Hall’s schedule. We will be starting off with one-on-one
appointments and small groups. We will continue to work remotely on Mondays and
Fridays. Our hope is that we are fully open beginning in September.
We hope you have a wonderful summer!
Denise Rego, Director
The Brewster COA

COA Curbside Event!
Wednesday July 14 12:00 -1:00 Brewster COA, 1673 Main Street (back parking lot)
July is the beginning of the second half of the year and is a great time to start any of those pesky New
Year’s resolutions you have put off since January. July also gained the name, “dog days” as they were
connected with the star Sirius which is part of the Canis Major (Greater Dog) star system. Today, the
dog days refer to when the hottest days of summer begin. While all this is fascinating it does not
compare with it being National Ice Cream month! Join us for our monthly curbside event and partake in
a cool treat during the dog days of summer.

8am to 8:30am
Brewster COA, 1673 Main Street, in the back parking lot
The cost is $3.00 per pet’s nail trim for senior (60+) pet-owners. For more information, please text
(preferred) or call Karen Duble of Buttons and Bows at 508-360-2596.
Beach Wheelchair - Rental Update
In the past, the Brewster Council on Aging would loan out the beach wheelchairs.
That made the process very difficult, as a large SUV was needed to transport them.
Currently, the Town’s beach wheelchairs are housed in a shed at Long Pond,
Paines Creek and Breakwater Beach. Here is an update on how to borrow one:
Call the Brewster COA at 508-896-2737 to reserve a chair at one of the three
locations. Paine’s Creek is the only location that has an over-sand, PVC wheel-
chair. All beaches have the floatable wheelchairs which can go right into the water. The chairs can be
reserved for multiple days, but no longer than one week. Each chair must stay at the beach where it is
stored and it will be secured in the shed at the end of the day. A waiver will need to be signed and
received to reserve the chair.
When you arrive at the beach where you have reserved the chair, you will need to call the Brewster
Police Department non-emergency number: 508-896-7011. Someone from the Brewster Police will
then be able to assist you in retrieving the wheelchair.

Wise and Well Use of Medicines Parts 1 & 2
Presented by Donna Bartlett,
Certified Geriatric Pharmacist
Older adults are at high risk for a variety of adverse
drug reactions (ADR’s) from both prescribed and
over the counter medications. ADR’s send almost
450,000 older Americans to the emergency room
each year, more than twice the rate as younger
persons. In this two part series, learn why you
might be at high risk, how to keep your medica-
tions in check to reduce risk, and proactive steps
you can take to stay wise and well.
Please see the Channel 18 schedule on page 7 for
air times.
Protective Services
Presented by Eddie Murphy, Protective
Services Manager Elder Services of
Cape Cod and the Islands
Massachusetts law (M.G.L. Chapter 19A) defines
elder abuse as an act or omission which results in a
serious physical or emotional injury to an elderly
person; or is the failure, inability or resistance of
an elderly person to provide for himself or herself
one or more of the necessities essential for physical
and emotional well-being without which the elderly
person would be unable to safely remain in the
community.
This presentation will discuss the Protective Ser-
vices program that provides twenty-four hour a
day, seven day a week assistance for anyone sixty
or older who has been abused, neglected, financial-
ly exploited or is at risk of harm due to self-neglect.
Please see the Channel 18 schedule on page 7 for
air times.
Pollen Ecology
Presented by Larry Dapsis,
Cape Cod Entomologist
Honeybees, both locally and nationally, have been
suffering catastrophic losses. This program will
review honeybee biology and the factors responsi-
ble for the problem. In addition, we will review the
state of wild pollinators like bumblebees and the
things residents can do to help them. Many of the
fruits and vegetables we eat require pollination.
Please see the Channel 18 schedule on page 7 for
air times.

Heatstroke
Older adults are at a significantly increased risk of suffering from heatstroke, particularly in the
summer months. It is important to understand this dangerous condition for the safety of yourself and
others. A prompt and appropriate response could save a life.
Factors that can further increase the risk of heatstroke include poor circulation, inefficient sweat
glands, lung disease, high blood pressure or another cardiac disease, being substantially overweight or
underweight, drinking alcoholic beverages, being dehydrated, visiting overcrowded places, lack of
transportation, extremely hot living quarters and overdressing.
Those with a higher risk of heatstroke should consider staying indoors on hot and humid days. It is
important to use fans or air conditioners to keep your home as cool as possible. If you cannot adequately
cool your home, you may consider visiting a building that is typically open to the public and air -
conditioned (religious buildings, libraries, senior centers, movie theaters, malls, etc.).
In addition, opt for lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable fabrics when getting dressed.
Always ensure you are adequately hydrating throughout the day and bringing water with you when you
leave the house.
Pay attention to how you feel when you are exposed to heat and humidity this summer. Symptoms of
heatstroke include fainting, a change in behavior (confusion, combativeness, staggering, possible
delirium, or coma), dry and flushed skin, a strong and rapid pulse, and lack of sweating. Seek immediate
medical attention for a person with any of these symptoms, especially if they are an older adult.
If you suspect that someone is suffering from a heat-related illness:
1. Call 911 if you suspect heatstroke.
2. Get the person out of the heat and into a shady, air-conditioned, or otherwise cool place. Urge
them to lie down.
3. If the person can swallow safely, offer fluids such as water and fruit or vegetable juices (not
alcohol or caffeine).
4. Apply a cold, wet cloth to the wrists, neck, armpits, and groin. These are places where blood
passes close to the surface of the skin, and a cold cloth can help cool the blood.
5. Encourage the person to shower, bathe, or sponge off with cool water if it is safe to do so.

Sightings from the Poop Deck
Archibald MacNeal Willard
“The essence of America—that which really unites us—is not ethnicity, or nationality or
religion—it is an idea—and what an idea it is: That you can come from humble
circumstances and do great things.” – Condoleezza Rice
I began writing this on Memorial Day and you can guess why. The weekend was a total rainout
and since the work in the lawn and garden could wait, well, may as well do something productive. A re-
cent article in the Cape Codder titled “9 Revolutionary War Veterans Being Honored in Brewster”
piqued my interest. I have no interest in taking rubbings on gravestones, but if you tell me that there is
this cemetery in Brewster which I have neither explored, nor know where it is, I’m interested. The Cape
Cod Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution were honoring the nine who fought in the Ameri-
can Revolution with a ceremony at eleven o’clock on Saturday May 29. I did not go because attendance
was limited and more importantly for me, it was raining! However, the following Tuesday after our trip
to the landfill, we decided to do a little “gunkholing” sans sailboat, to find Sears’ Ancient Cemetery.
I do not wish to tell you exactly where the cemetery is because I don’t want to exclude the element
of surprise/fun which you will experience. I will tell you that to gain access you must enter on Airline
Road in Dennis. The rest is up to you. Use your Army Ranger skills to take you to your destination. It ’s
really worth it; a babbling Quivett Creek, a pair of graceful swans, a bench to rest when you realize you
made a wrong turn and sank up to your knees in mud, etc. When you reach the signs that read “Private
Property” just keep going and obey the rules. You will know when you have reached the “Promised
Land,” but rest easy, your stay will only be a temporary one.
I counted nine flags that had been placed on those brave militia men’s graves and thought how
wonderful that they would be remembered by The Sons of The American Revolution almost 250 years
later. We should be so lucky!
