Beach Wheelchair - Rental Update
In the past, the Brewster Council on Aging loaned out the beach wheel-
chairs. That made the process very difficult, as a large SUV was needed to
transport them. Currently, the Town’s beach wheelchairs are housed in sheds
at Long Pond, Paine’s Creek, and Breakwater Beach. Here is how to
borrow one:
To reserve the beach wheelchair at Long Pond, please contact the Brewster
Recreation Department at 508-896-9430. The beach wheel chair at this location is a floatable one,
which can go right into the water.
To reserve a beach wheelchair at either Paine’s Creek or Breakwater Beach, contact the Brewster COA at
508-896-2737. Paine’s Creek has two types of beach wheelchairs: over sand or floatable.
Breakwater Beach has a floatable wheelchair only.
The chairs can be reserved for multiple days, but no longer than one week. Each chair must stay at the
beach where it is stored and it will be secured in the shed at the end of the day. A waiver will need to be
signed and received to reserve the chair.
When you arrive at the beach where you have reserved the chair, you will need to call the non-
emergency number for the Brewster Police Department: 508-896-7011. Someone from the Police
Department will then be able to assist you in retrieving the wheelchair.

Curbside Event
Brewster COA August 18 12:00 – 1:00pm
(back parking lot)
Once upon a time, a real group called the Secret
Society of Happy People decided to dedicate a day
to the pursuit of happiness. Members of the society
wanted to let happy feelings linger inside them eve-
ry day. In 2000, the Secret Society of Happy People
expanded the celebration to Happiness Happens
Month in August.
Happiness is a choice. Remembering happiness
does not mean you are problem free. That kind of
life doesn’t exist. As the Stoics of Ancient Greece
observed, happiness is all about the quality of your
thoughts. Happiness is not a destination, but
rather a life-long pursuit. Joy can be anywhere at
any time. Don’t limit yourself to searching for
pleasure. Enjoy everything and anything that
makes you happy.
Join us on August 18 to share some happy words
and thoughts with each other as we near being in
person together again soon.

Preventing Tick-Borne Disease
The most common tick-borne diseases in Massachusetts are Lyme, Babesiosis, and Anaplasmosis.
Black-legged ticks (often referred to as deer ticks) are responsible for the most common tick-borne
diseases as well as others. Spring, summer, and fall are the most common seasons to suffer a bite from a
black-legged tick. Adult black-legged ticks are the size of a sesame seed and young, nymphs are the size
of a poppy seed. They can look like a freckle on the skin due to their incredibly small size.
There are other types of ticks and tick -borne illnesses in Massachusetts but the goal for staying safe and
healthy remains the same- prevention is key!
If you are out in wooded and grassy areas, wear light-colored clothing so it is easier to spot ticks. Your
clothing should cover as much of your skin as possible. Permethrin-treated clothing can prevent ticks as
well as DEET containing bug repellants. DEET containing repellants can be used on the skin but it is
very important to follow product instructions for use. The CDC website has some valuable resources for
preventing ticks in your yard and on your pets.
Checking yourself daily for ticks is one of the most important steps you can take to prevent tick -borne
disease. Pay particular attention to areas between toes, groins, neck, ears, hairline, legs, and backs of
knees. Showering once a day in the evening could also help you spot a tick promptly.
If you do find a tick attached to your skin you will want to remove it as soon as possible. To do this use a
clean pair of fine-point tweezers, grab as close to the skin as possible, and pull straight out. Do not wait
for the tick to detach itself or apply any folklore remedies (ie. nail polish or petroleum jelly) to the tick as
it may increase the chance of the tick spreading disease. Note on your calendar when the tick was re-
moved. You may also want to save the tick for identification. You should also notify your physician of
the event or if you develop any symptoms of tick-borne disease. Your doctor may choose to prescribe
medicine following a tick bite.
If you experience rash, chills, headache, fatigue, joint or muscle aches, you should notify your healthcare
provider. It is important to stay diligent regarding the prevention of tick bites this summer and into the
fall. Any time the temperature is above freezing the risk still exists. The outdoors can have many won-
derful health effects, so take precautions and enjoy this beautiful place we call home.

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“The way I see it, life is a jelly doughnut. You don't really know what it's about until you
bite into it. And then, just when you decided it's good, you drop a big glob of jelly on
your best T-shirt.” Janet Evanovich
Stop me if you’ve heard this before…”a gorilla walks into a bar”...only kidding. Lately I’ve noticed that
I appear to be exerting more effort while bending over to tie my shoes, or pick up things which I have
dropped. Google Photos popped up on my iPhone the other day and there was a picture taken four years
ago of Joan and I with our grandson Pete the day he graduated from Auburn University. I had on a shirt
with horizontal stripes, which technically is a no no if you are trying to look svelte. Vertical stripes would
be the uniform of the day for us fatties, but I did not think of myself as fat back then...not yet!
So here I am in August, looking at my brand new Weber Grill and thinking about diets and how this
pain in my knees will miraculously go away if I could shed more than a few pounds, but what would that
diet look like and what sacrifices would I have to endure? What mysteriously popped into my head im-
mediately was a gorgeous jelly doughnut. Don’t know why, but there it was, oozing jelly out of a little
hole in one side. Bear with me for a moment while I go off on a jelly doughnut tangent.
When Joanie Carfora and I were teenagers, we used to spend our Thursday nights at St. Anthony of
Padua CYO in, where else, Passaic, New Jersey. I can hear all of you now, groaning, “Oh no, not another
Passaic story!” I’m going to make believe I did not hear you. Anyway, after the CYO I had to walk Joanie
Carfora home, since we were only sixteen and were not old enough to drive. On our walk up Oak Street
we always had to pass the doughnut factory, located down a dark alley no more than four feet wide,
pitch black and spooky, but I was not scared; I was safe, I had Joanie Carfora with me. At the end of the
alley was an old wooden door, and no, it wasn’t a green door, which you knocked on to purchase your
jelly doughnuts and also, to watch as they were being made. I think they were a nickel apiece. Your pur-
chase would then be put into a brown paper bag which you could watch change colors as it absorbed the
grease. Ooooo, they were soooo good!
So what, you ask, does all of this have to do with that guy in Provincetown being swallowed by a
humpback whale, or me not being able to see, or reach, my toes? I cannot explain this wandering
thought phenomena that goes on in those dark recesses of my uninhabited mind. I’m just rambling and
still can’t tie my own shoes. Goodbye jelly doughnuts!
Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - And so are jelly doughnuts!!
