Minutes April 12, 2005 Special Meeting Page 1 of2 Minutes Approved: May 9, 2005 100 Town of Hill~ SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES IDLLSBOROUGH TOWN BOARD April 12, 2005 7:30 PM, Town Barn The Hillsborough Town Board held a special meeting on April 12, 2005 at 7:30 PM in the Hillsborough Town Barn for the purpose of meeting with members of the Chamber of Commerce, the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, and the Orange County Economic Development Commission to discuss economic development issues. Present for the Board Meeting were Mayor Joe Phelps, and Commissioners Eric Hallman, Frances Dancy, Michael Gering, Brian Lowen, and Evelyn Lloyd. Staff present were Town Manager Eric Peterson, and Town Clerk Donna Armbrister. Others Present were Dianne Reid, Alois Callemyn, Margaret Cannell, Cathleen Turner WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION 7:03:17 PM Mayor Joe Phelps welcomed everyone and introduced the various speakers. CHANGES TO THE AGENDA There were no changes to the Agenda O. C. ECONOMIC STRATEGIC PLAN 7:04:54 PM Dianne Reid introduced members of the Economic Development Commission who were present. 7:06:53 PM Dianne Reid gave a Power Point presentation called "Investing In Innovation'. This presentation also contained the EDC Mission. Dianne presented an overview of the plan stating that the overall goal is to create 5,000 new private sector jobs and increase the assessed value of non-residential property by $125 million in Orange County by June, 2009. She reviewed the Business-focused strategies and Worker-focused strategies which are vital components of the plan. A copy of the Presentation is hereby incorporated by reference and made a part of these official Minutes as an Attachment. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 7:42:40 PM Margaret Cannell and Tom Struckmeyer stated that the Orange County Economic Strategic Plan will be presented to the Chamber Board of Directors later this week. Tom stated that one additional goal is to make sure that Hillsborough.'s downtown area does not get left behind with the focus on the other Economic Development Districts. 7:59:49 PM Commissioner Hallman suggested holding a quarterly Economic Summit meeting. The group in attendance agreed that this would be a good idea. . . . She discussed the importance of historic preservation and cultural heritage in economic development. She also mentioned the importance of the entranceways into Town to keep visitors coming and returning to Hillsborough. She mentioned that new amenities in Town need to be developed. 8:24: I3 PM Alois Callemyn stated that since he has been in Hillsborough, three major businesses have gone out of business and their buildings are now owned by the County and used for County Offices. DISCUSSION 8:37:14 PM Town Manager Eric Peterson suggested involving the neighboring businesses and citizens to seek their comments on the proposed Gateway Center. By consensus, the Board directed staff to invite them to the April Workshop. ADJOURN 8:40:09 PM Upon a motion by Commissioner Gering, seconded by Commissioner Hallman, the =~ ~o PM by a vote of 5-0.
