Celebrate National Senior Center Month September: 15, 22, 29 9:00 - 10:00am Brewster COA 1673 Main Street In honor of National Senior Center Month, you are invited to join us for donuts and coffee. Hope to see you there! Future of Cape Cod Sea Camps An announcement was made by the Brewster Select Board and Town Administrator Peter Lombardi at the July 26 Select Board meeting that the Brewster voters will be able to consider a public acquisition of the Cape Cod Sea Camps properties. The Sea Camps’ owners have offered two properties for sale: The Bay Parcel: A 55-acre parcel at 3057 Main Street (Route 6A) that stretches from Main Street north to Cape Cod Bay. The Pond Parcel: A 66-acre parcel at 500 W. H. Besse Cartway that extends from Route 137 (Long Pond Road) west to Long Pond. The Select Board believes that Brewster voters deserve the chance to decide if the Town should acquire the Sea Camps and determine the future of these prop- erties. The properties offer opportunities for significant public benefits including conservation of land, coastal dunes, and wetlands; habitat and drinking water protection; beach access; a home for a community center; extensive recrea- tional amenities; and housing. To keep acquisition costs as low as possible, the Select Board followed the disposition process put in place by the current owners and their representatives, and the Town submitted bids for both parcels on June 23, 2021. The bids are contingent on authorization by Town Meeting vote and a special election ballot question. The bids were based on property appraisals, title research, dis- cussion with Town counsel, and consul- tation with local land use professionals including an engineer and a conserva- tion land acquisition expert. The Town is concerned these properties may be privately developed. Both par- cels are zoned for development and the Town is aware that at least two major developers have submitted bids to pur- chase the Sea Camps. The Town contin- ues to seek a negotiated sale. However, if that is not successful, Brewster voters may consider acquiring the Sea Camps through eminent domain. A Special Town Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 25th at 10am on the Stony Brook Field to consider this matter. Acquisition of one or both parcels require approval by both Town Meeting and at the ballot. Accordingly, a special election will be held on Tuesday, October 5 from 7am to 8pm at the Brewster Baptist Church. A virtual public forum was held on Tuesday, August 17 at 6pm to provide voters with detailed information about the potential acquisition, and the plans for Special Town Meeting and a special election. In addition to the public forum, updates and additional information about the potential acquisition of the Sea Camps will be posted on the Town website (www.brewster-ma.gov) and distributed on the Town’s social media. Print information will be available at Town Hall. The Sea Camps ceased operations in 2020, and since then the Select Board and Town Administration analyzed possible acquisition of the two parcels. Acquisition for public use appears to be aligned with community priorities iden- tified in the Brewster Vision Plan and resident feedback from other recent strategic planning initiatives. If Brewster voters decide to acquire the Cape Cod Sea Camps, the Town will facilitate a public engagement process inviting input from residents about potential future uses. Dr. Rappaport is presently interested in container gardening and includes the belief that the genera- tive response one feels when giving help to growing plants is meaningful. Containers allow for experi- mentation with shapes and sizes and plantings. This activity is innately interesting and the results are rewarding. IT’S JUST ABOUT TIME FOR MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT! The annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period is October 15 - December 7 each year. It is important to review your health and prescription coverages during this time to ensure that you have the most cost-effective plans for 2022. Each year, Medicare plans can change premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and even prescription formularies (the list of drugs covered). Often, these changes are significant. Medicare Advantage Plans (HMOs and PPOs) often add and/or drop primary and specialty physicians, skilled nursing facilities and hospitals, so these potential changes are worthy of your attention at this time of year; the only time during the year when you are allowed to make changes. Please contact the Brewster COA 508 -896-2737 to make an appointment for Open Enrollment as soon as possible, as we have heavy demand. You will need to bring your Medicare card, a complete list of prescription drugs with dosages, and your insurance cards to the appointment. Property Tax Relief Applications are now available for the Fiscal Year 2022 tax season to qualifying seniors who meet certain eligibility requirements. Please call Brenda Locke or Debra Johnson to find out if you qualify for significant savings at 508-896-2737 or email blocke@brewster-ma.gov. SHINE Notes: I'm in the “donut hole”. What can I do? If you have reached or are about to reach that gap in your Part D plan, the Commonwealth’s Prescrip- tion Advantage program can help. For individuals with an annual income less than $38,640 (single) or $52,260 (married), Prescription Advantage can lower your co-payments while in this gap. There is no premium for this state-sponsored pharmacy assistance program. Call the SHINE office at the COA today for more information at 508-896-2737. The Importance of Exercise Exercise is an important part of overall health and wellness at any age but is especially beneficial as we get older. Benefits such as improved strength and balance can help to reduce the risk of falls and physical injury. Improved sleep, better mood, and increased energy are among some of the other great reasons to get and stay active. Physical activity can also help you manage and prevent osteoporosis, certain types of cancers, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and arthritis. In addition, regular physical activity is an important part of achieving and maintaining healthy body weight. Participating in regular physical activity could help you stay independent longer or even gain some independence back if you feel you have lost it. Whatever your motivation for exercise, always focus on safety so you can continue for years to come. For most older adults walking, swimming, riding a bike, and gardening are considered safe. However, you should always consult your physician before starting an exercise program. Nia.nih.gov has many helpful resources and safety tips. Especially the information related to safety with outdoor exercise. If you are finding it difficult to get moving regularly, it may be helpful to make a plan with a friend or family member to help keep you accountable. Participating in an exercise class or scheduling a walk can help make your workout more fun. Always listen to your body, increase activity slowly, and try to select activities you enjoy. Too late for hemming and hawing, you already committed yourself, so it’s time to prepare. A visit to the appliance store for our second guest room air conditioner. After all, we wouldn’t want them to become overheated….hmmm, perhaps that would shorten their stay? A new 55-inch TV to replace the one that conveniently failed as we were negotiating arrangements. A trip to Shaw ’s to fill our fridge with stuff we never eat and a half dozen cases of Poland Spring, since millennials only do name brands. Save the Shaws Refresh for us! A call to have our septic pumped in anticipation of the daily laundry. I seem to recall that this washing machine was a replacement for the one that failed during a previous family visit. Have we forgotten anything of importance, or have we not learned anything? They had pretty much zoned in on where they wanted to go and what they wanted to see and do. A cou- ple nights hootin’and hollerin’ at the Woodshed, shopping in Chatham with lunch at The Squire, a day in Provincetown, and how can you visit grandma’s without a day at Nauset Beach? The plan was to have our lobsta rolls at Sesuit, but the sand and sun tired these poor 25 year olds so much so that they had to come home and nap, but before their nap they placed their orders from the 400 East menu. We did not join them for dinner. The sun had set, it was dark, and it was time for me to go to bed. Remember, “On the seventh day, we too needed to rest!” The next day a short trip to Barnstable for the bus to South Station and their connection to Amtrak to New York City. It had been more than three days and I was beginning to detect a whiff of the Chatham Fish Pier. Besides, we needed to prepare for the next wave, “The Panama Connection.” Our oldest daughter, grandson, his wife and one of our seven great grandchildren would be arriving at Logan short- ly from Panama, for a few days stay and we needed to be prepared for another millennial go round....and more laundry.
