We've reviewed the documentation you've provided us, including the photographs, floor plans, historic images, and basic history on Lorenzo Bush. We are evaluating this information using the National Register Criteria for Evaluation, which require a property to be over 50 years of age, have historic significance through association with significant events, people, architecture, or archaeology, and have historic integrity by preserving the property's location, setting, design, materials, workmanship, association and feeling. We have a few questions: • Do you know the general dates of the alterations done to the house? We can see that some of the exterior porches were enclosed. Some alterations were done before the City acquired the property in 1970 The City did some interior repairs in 2019 and the roof in 2002 • When was the house converted into an office? After the City acquired in 1970. The Council on Aping has been in there since 1980 • Were any of the interior partition walls removed? Not that we are aware of. • Are there any comparable houses nearby? some older homes, but they have brick exteriors. • Regarding Lorenzo Bush, o What were some of his accomplishments while serving on city council? New City hall was commissioned in 1937 o How did his home become a refuge for people fleeing the coast in the 1920s? No record, but possibly Railroad employees that lived in the coastal areas of the County. o How long did he work for the railroad? What was the responsibility of a track foreman? We have no record of how long Mr. Bush worked for the railroad prior to his move to Crestview. He was 74 when he passed away in 1948. He was retired at the time of his passing, so we can assume he was retired when he ran for City Council in 1935. He was track foreman when he moved to Crestview in 1910 from Pensacola. There was a that time a depot in Crestview and we believe the track foreman would ensure the upkeep of the tracks in the Crestview area. Currently, we think the property may be eligible for the National Register under Criterion C: Architecture for its bungalow form and Craftsman architectural style, but we need to know more about the changes to the house. We do not have enough information to evaluate the property for its association with Mr. Bush, as we have to establish his importance in the community and we need to identify where and when his significant activities occurred. If you would like more information on the National Register Criteria and how they are applied to properties, please see the National Park Service's National Register Bulletin 15: How to Apply the National Register Criteria for Evaluation: https://www.nps.gov/subiects/nationalregister/upload/NRB-15 web508.pdf (PDF). We would appreciate you additional information within 30 days, so we may complete the review of your PSIQ and provide you with an official determination of eligibility for the National Register. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or wish to discuss your PSIQ submission. Sincerely, Ruben Acosta Ruben A.
