for Low Vision by Dr -Alexis
Malkin, New England College of Optometry

Dr. Malkin is an optometrist and professor who will
discuss an ongoing study which NECO, in
collaboration with the Stein Eye Institute at UCLA,
is conducting. The organizations are interested in
finding out if there are benefits related to the use
of smartphone applications for assistance with

interested in finding out more about assistive apps
and how technology might help those with low

We will offer two more sessions in May with Steve
McGrath. In the fifth session, you will learn to
connect your camera to the computer, transfer
picture files, format your digital media card,
organize, rotate and name your images, save your
files in different formats, and archive your
photos. Finally, in the sixth session, you will learn
several ways to use your existing camera gear to
make spectacular macro photographs. This session
will help you enter the wonderful new world of
photo opportunities.

Tuesday, May 17 at 1.30 to 2:30 pm
Come and walk with me through the exciting city
of San Jose, the Capital of Costa Rica. Let's
experience firsthand how Costa Ricans go about
their daily business, come and admire historical
buildings and in addition to that, we will see,
touch, talk and learn about medicinal plants that
have been used for centuries here in Costa Rica.
Alejandro worked as a tour guide in places like

During this session, Betsy Simmons will
help us to reflect and share our experiences as
caregivers. She will create a safe space for the
participants to share their stories and to get and
provide an emotional support. For 35 years, Betsy
worked at MA Department of Public Health &
Education, Hospices, Hospitals, Senior Centers,
Recovery Programs, Domestic Violence &
Homeless Shelters, Community Centers and State
Prisons. Betsy teaches spiritual care, self -care,
and care for caregiver. She facilitates support
groups for patients, families, providers, and
caregivers.

It is hard to believe, but all these entertainers
made their first recordings on wax cylinders or
Edison discs made of shellac. With tunes like
Swanee and April Showers, Al Jolson's singing
style was brash and extroverted, but he could also
deliver songs sentimental, melodramatic. Sophie
Tucker, was known for her powerful delivery of
comical and risque material, and Some of These

Charles River Bike Path Walk
We will continue walks along the Charles river
bike path on Tuesdays in May. The group will
be meeting at the Joseph Thompson
Pedestrian Bridge at 10 am and walking for 30
minutes towards Bridge street and back.
There is free two-hour parking on California
street and meter parking at the Dealtry Pool
Parking off Pleasant street. Please call us to
pre -register.
Jazz Dance & Fitness with Miss Susan
Join Susan, certified dance and senior fitness
trainer, to have some fun on Fridays at 10:30
am; wear comfortable clothes and sneakers.

SENIOR SHUTTLE NEWS
Let Us do the Driving!
The Senior Shuttle Bus is a convenient and safe
way to get to the local grocery stores, Target, the
Watertown Mall and other scheduled destinations
How Does It Work?
Select the day(s) you would like to go and call the
Senior Center at (617) 972-6490 at least 2 days in
advance to reserve your seat on the Shuttle Bus.
Make sure to ask about available trip times, as
each trip often has a few times (runs) to choose
from. The Shuttle Bus will pick you up at your
home and deliver you back home once the trip is
over.
How many people can ride the Shuttle Bus?
At this time and to keep people safely distanced,
each run is limited to 10 riders. Masks must be
worn at all times. Shuttle Bus service is for
Watertown residents only.
How Many Bags Can I Bring On?
Riders are limited to 3 shopping bags that you
must be able to carry easily yourself. Due to
COVID-19 precautions, the driver will not be able
to assist.
How much does it cost?
The total cost is $2.00 payable to the driver
Tipping is not necessary.

The price of the ticket is $16. We will be at the
museum at 11:00 am, and the bus will start picking
up participants at 9 am.

4i'lt` Quilt Museurn England Quilt Museum on
Friday, May 20. The price of the ticket is $9. We will
be at the museum at 11:30 am, and the bus will
start picking participants up at 9:30 am. The
museum opened in 1987, and was founded and
staffed by quiltmakers. It has been since its start
committed to both craft and fine arts quilts, with
exhibits and classes incorporating contemporary as
well as traditional fiber arts approaches.
The museum moved into its current space in 1994,
after a flood in its previous building. The new space,
the historic Lowell Institute for Savings building,
gave the museum more room for exhibits,
collection storage and preparation, classrooms, a
museum shop, and events. It is now part of the
Lowell National Historical Park, which highlights
Lowell's centrality to the 19th century textile trade
and Industrial Revolution in the United States.
Belle Isle Join us to enjoy delightful seafood at
Seafood a Winthrop gem — Belle Isle Seafood
restaurant on Friday, May 27 at noon.
We will be at the restaurant at about 12:00 pm, and
the bus will start picking participants up at 10:30
am. Belle Isle Seafood is Winthrop's gem that
should be on the list of "to visit" restaurants in New
England. This spot is ideal for getting unparalleled
views of the Boston skyline, Logan Airport, Zakim
Bridge, and the Bunker Hill Monument. Anthony
Bourdain shared his appreciation for the simple
decor, pure focus on fresh and tasty food that locals
and tourists alike have come to love.

One -Day Trips with Fox Tours
This year, we are planning to have five one -day
trips with Fox Tours. Registration starts on
Monday, April 4. Call us if you want to get the trip
flyers — we will mail or e-mail those to you. All
participants need to be vaccinated and will be
wearing masks on the bus. The prices of tickets
were subsidized by the Friends of Watertown
Council on Aging The ticket price is $89/person.

Medicare High Prescription Drug Costs?
Prescription Advantage May Help!
S" 1 N IE Prescription Advantage is a state
assistance program which may lower the amount
you pay for prescription drugs. Members are also
allowed to join or change their Medicare drug plan
or Medicare Advantage plan one time per calendar
year. Eligibility is based on income onlyand there is
no asset limit!
Who can join?
For Massachusetts residents eligible for Medicare,
Prescription Advantage may provide secondary
drug coverage if you are:
• 65 or older with an annual income at Qt
or less than $67,950 for a single
person or $91,550 for a married couple OR
a Under 65 with a disability, with an annual
income at or less than $25,549 for a single
person or $34,423 for a married couple
The SHINE Program can help you apply for
Prescription Advantage. Trained SHINE volunteers
offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of
Medicare and related health and drug insurance
programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call
your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related
matters, call 1-800-243-4636.
June 2022 Exhibition
tcl Senior Center Art Class
This year, our Art Class members
will continue exhibiting their work
in the June issue of the Senior Center's
Newsletter. We started this tradition at the
beginning of the COVID shut -down. The Art Class
was one of the first classes that switched to the
Zoom presentation style, and since then, it has
been regularly meeting every Monday at 10 am.
More than seventy artworks were exhibited in the

spring, we invite all Watertown community
members to contribute up to three photographs to
the Watertown Collective Memory Project. There
are two ways to contribute:
Drop -In Digitization Days (for physical photos)
Bring your photos to the Library and we'll scan
them for you! Visit watertownlib.org/memory for
upcoming dates and times.
Upload Online (for digital photos)
Digital snapshots social media pics, and

Senior Safe Program
IN
The Watertown Fire Department was
awarded a grant again this year for the
Senior Safe Program and will be installing
Smoke/CO Detectors along with lock boxes for
Watertown Seniors. While there they can
provide a brief home safety evaluation.
Renew your Parking Permit either by calling the
Senior Center on 617 972 6490, Monday to Friday,
from 9 am to 4:30 pm, or by coming to the Senior
Center with your driver's license and car registration.
No appointment is required.
