HomeMy Public PortalAbout12-21-1972 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS & SAFETY OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, DECEMBER 21 , 1972 The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Richmond, Indiana, met in regular session December 21 , 1972, at the hour of 9:00 a.m. , in the Municipal Building. , of said City. Mr. Judge presided with Mr. Benner and Miss Wynegar present. The following business was had to-wit: Fire Chief William Berry asked the Board to take action on charges against Fire-fighter Alfred Bowen, Jr. for being late four (4) times for duty during a one'year period. Chief Berry recommended a one (1 ) day suspension because this was his first offense. Fire-fighter Alfred Bowen, Jr. , appeared before the Board. Miss Wynegar, City Attorney, advised Mr. Bowen of his right to a public hearing and to have counsel . Mr. Bowen formally waived his right to a public hearing. Mr. Judge moved to give Fire-fighter Alfred Bowen, Jr. , a one (1 ) day suspension seconded by Mr. Benner and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Mr. Charles W. Miller, Supt. of Mails , appeared before the Board for further discussion on officially changing the name of Abington Pike north of Test . Road to Wouthwest Second Street. It was suggested that this might be a matter for Common Council consideration. Police Chief Donald Strahan presented the following letter to the Board: December 19, 1972 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY Jerald J. Judge, President Dear Board Members : I request permission to send Officers Paul Alexander, Jack Myers and Charles Brown to the 20th Session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy. This Session will be held atIndiana University, Bloomington, Indiana for six weeks from January 8, 1973 .to February 17, 1973. All expenses for the school will be provided by the Indiana Criminal Justice Planning Agency with the exception of transportation costs which we will provide. Sincerely, /s/ Donald L. Strahan Chief of Police Mr. Judge moved to send Officers Paul Alexander, Jack Myers and Charles Brown to the 20th Session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Academy, seconded by Mr. Benner and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Mrs. Vivian Barnes , License Branch Manager, requested a restricted parking space be provided for the Driver Examiner at thenew location on North 6th Street. Traffic Captain, Scott Loper, recommended reserving the first parking space on the East side of North Sixth and Main Streets . Mr. Benner moved to follow the recommendation of the Police Department and reserve the designated parking space for the Driver Examiner, seconded by Miss Wynegar and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Page 2 Board of Works Minutes December 21 , 1972 Chief Berry presented the following recommendations to the Board: December 20, 1972 Board of Public Works & Safety City of Richmond, Indiana Dear Board, The following is presented to the Board of Public Works and Safety for action. 1 ) Nora Ward has successfully completed his one year probationary period on the Fire Department. Fire-fighter Ward has passed the probationary test and I recommend that he be advanced to the status of a regular fire-fighter, effective December 17, 1972. 2) William Reece, Jr. has successfully completed his one year probationary period on the Fire Department. Fire-fighter Reece has passed the probationary test and I recommend that he be advanced to the status of a regular fire-fighter effec- tive December 20, 1972. Sincerely, /s/ William H. Berry Fire Chief Mr. Judge moved to advance Nora Ward to a status of a regular fire-fighter, effective December 17, 1972 and to advance William Reece, Jr. to status of a regular fire-fighter effective December 20, 1972, seconded by Mr. Benner and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried.
