City Controller Jerry Judge read the following letter to the Board: Board of Works City of Richmond, INdiana Gentlemen: On the 21st of September, my wife, son, and I were involved in the fatal accident at Northwest V Street and Williamsburg Pike. I am writeing at this time to; ask that you commend police officers Keith Retz #146 and Don Hazelwander #119. These two men, it seems , were on the scene before my car had come to rest. My son, 15 months old, was bleeding badly from his ears and loosing spinal fluid. Seeing this , your officers immediately removed him from the wreckage and transported him to Reid Hospital in their car. I believe that this quick action and sound thinking saved the life of my son. Oh sure, they will say, "We were just doing our job." I don't believe that! Not for a minute. They did more than just a "job". It takes a special breed of man to be a policeman and to them I believe that it is a life - not just a job! I am so glad to know that we have that breed in Officers Retz and Hazelwander in the City. My wife and I would also like to thank Sgt. Shoemaker and his Secretary for their kindness and consideration in our home while they carried out their investigation. My son suffered three fractures at the base of his skull and a fracture of the left elbow. He wasn't expected to live when he arrived at Riley Hospital in Indiananpolis. he lay unconscious for ten days and his entire stay was three weeks . He is home now, just as sharp and alert as ever. He can do anything with the exception of walking alone and we are sure he will have a complete recovery. Our sincere thanks to all of you. Respectfully, /s/ Mr. & Mrs .
