The lights on Ocean Blvd (SR A1A) should in my opinion, be different than those to be installed within the residential
streets of Gulf Stream. Currently, we have FPL cobra head fixtures on 8 foot arms. The arms allow the fixtures to reach
out from the vegetation. A similar fixture was installed along US 1 in North Palm Beach as shown below. It is painted
green with a green Stresscrete decorative concrete pole. A fixture like this with LED and cutoff optics would fit into the
canopy with minimal visual intrusion.
Palm Beach has installed turtle friendly fixtures as shown below where the raodway is close to the beach. The hood is
extended to preclude glare and turtle issues.

Due to clear zone requirements, we anticipate that we will need toplace the poles along A1A at the right of way line to
obtain our FDOT permit, which will put the lights at about 18 feet off the edge of the pavement. We also this the lights
need to blend in with the vegetation. Fixtures of the “Cutoff” type provide no light emmission to the sides, typicall only to
about 85 degrees off vertical. That means a person in a car will not see the light source, but will only see the illumination
on the ground when viewing the fixture from a distance of 190 feet or more assuming the fixture is at a height of 20 feet.
We need to quickly develop a recommendation for the poles and fixture to be installed on SR A1A.
If we cannot decide, another alternative on A1A is to have FPL install the same cobra head high pressure sodium fixtures
we now have mounted on concrete underground street lighting poles. They would be served via underground power
cables. Below is the one existing at the north end of County Road.

Gentlemen:
Here are some details on the fixture we are proposing for the town. Some general notes:
The Windsor 30 scales to poles up to 14’ high. If we use higher poles, I’d suggest using the larger Windsor 40. - Yes, we will
be using the 14-foot high poles.
We will use 3000K LEDs for a “warm” light. – So far, the only concern we have heard with the Town Commission regarding
LEDs is that it is not as “warm” as high pressure sodium lights. I am recommending LEDs because of the costs and, for crime
prevention, they show a truer color than HPS (or so I’ve been told).
The pole and base are suggested. The fluted pole can be used with any number of Beacon’s base designs, which are
outlined in the catalogs I left with Marty and Bill Thrasher, the town manager. The pole and base look great. The Town likes
to use quality materials if they know they will last.
Actual LED output and pole heights will be determined based upon the lighting plan we create. Please advise the desired
pole height and we will do our best to accommodate. 14’ is the desired height for the poles, unless you want to recognize a
different height for A1A.
Our understanding is, the town does not want a “uniform” lighting look. Currently, there are 85 FPL cobra light
poles/fixtures within the City. The City is looking to replace just those locations – so yes, there would be some areas with
more lights than others. Also, Town Hall and the Police Station would have double lights per pole.
If amber LEDs are required in any specific areas due to sea turtle concerns, we will furnish. – I will let you know if that is
desired.
I have a sample being prepared which I hope to pick up this week when I am at Beacon for a meeting. It will have two light
settings, to show a low and high output. - A Sample would be terrific. To see the sample will be essential for the Town
Commission to make a decision.
Due to a prior commitment, I will not be able to attend the 3/15 meeting, but Ryan Huff of LDI and, possibly, my partner
Sandy Langner will attend. They will have the sample and are well versed in Beacon’s construction and Led technology. You
th
will be missed. We will need Lighting Dynamics attendance for the 15.
The Town has asked me to present 2 options and to make a recommendation. Because the Town requires more
traditional architecture for its homes, a traditional-looking fixture, such as the Windsor, is the more appropriate. As a
second option, I will be recommending the LaJolla model.
I have a couple of questions/requests:
Do you have any literature/brochure that shows the Windsor model with the spikes (similar to what is shown on
page 4 of the 2011 hardcover Beacon catalog)? There are some in the community that like the spikey look.
Can you provide me with cut sheets information regarding the LaJolla model so I can include in more report as
another option?
Are there any other high-quality, LED, street light that should be also considered?
Do have a ballpark, per unit, cost there are for each light (fixture, pole and base)?
Do you know if there has been any other Beacon street light sales to governments that the Town could
piggyback the purchase?

Thank you for your assistance!
