HomeMy Public PortalAbout02-05-1970 • Bd. of Public Works & Safety 1/29/70 Page 153 Chief Strahan recommended that Donald Raymond,Kendall, age 31, R.R. #2, Box 108A Cambridge City, Indiana, and Russell Lynch, age 45, 933 South llth St., Richmond, Indiana, be appointed Special Police, to function as Campus Police on the Earlham Campus, their jurisdiction to be con- fined as all the other Campus Policemen, to Earlham College Campus, all college-owned buildings and grounds within the City, and the streets adjacent to the campus. Mr. Jacobs moved the Board approve the appoint- ments, seconded by Mr. Howell and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Chief Berry reported that the fire alarm system has temporarily been moved to the new No. 1 Fire Station, since the heat and water in the old building have broken down completely. He hoped to vacate the old building completely by the end of next week. Mr. Jacobs asked about the removal of the Christmas decorations downtown. Mr. Howell said the Fire Department is starting on it immediately, that the weather has held it up. Commissioner Goins asked the Board's approval to send Building Inspector Clifford Hunt to an electrical conference to be held in Indianapolis, - Feb. 5 and 6. Money is available. Mr. Howell moved the Board approve the request, seconded by Mr. Jacobs and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried.._ There being no further business on motion duly made, seconded and carried, the meeting adjourned. /s/ Andrew C. Cecere, President Attest: /s/ Lotte Hoskins, City Clerk BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND, INDIANA, FEBRUARY 5, 1970 The Board of Public Works and Safety of the City of Richmond, Indiana, met in regular session in the Municipal Bldg., February 5, 1970 at the hour of 9:00 a.m. Mr. Cecere presiding with the following members present: Mr. Howell, City Controller and Mr. Jacobs, City Engineer. The following business was had to-wit: Mr. Jacobs moved that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved, seconded by Mr. Howell and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Mr. Howell moved that the minutes of the meeting of January 22, 1970 be amended to read as follows: Line 27, page 3, General Fund amount of $325,000.00 maturity date should be 6/25/70 instead of 4/30/70, seconded by Mr. Jacobs and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Mr. Harry Kepler appeared to complain about the parking situation with regard to trucks owned by Brandenburg's and a trash problem in the back of Brandenburg's. Also, he thought there was a fire hazard in- an apartment building owned by Mr. Brandenburg. Building Commissioner Ed Goins said he would look into the apartment building situation. The Board took the other complaints under advisement pending an investigation by the Traffic Division. Total Spoken to: 50 students at Test 43 employees at Nettle Creek 717 students in elementary schools Our office worked with Greg Wornock, a high school student, who was doing a term paper about the Fire Prevention Bureau. Reported by: /s/ Harlan Green, Fire Marshal Fire Prevention Bureau City of Richmond, Indiana JANUARY MONTHLY REPORT Inspections 263 Re-Inspections 28 Orders Issued 12 Verbal Orders 16 Compliances 10 Captain Larry Bosell attended the State Fire Marshal's Office and the State Division of Forestry in behalf of the "Sparky" program. On January 19, Captain Griffin talked to a class on baby sitting and showed a film to 54 students at Dennis Junior High School. On January 22nd, all students were given an examination on Captain Griffin's demonstration and lecutre on artificial resuscitation. Note: all the class made an "A" except a girl who made a "B+". Captain Griffin is still working on the scrap book for our office on Fire Prevention to enter in state competition. Captain Sparks and Captain Bosell are putting much effort and time into the "Sparky" program for the schools on the 3rd and 4th grade level. The Fire Prevention Bureau is proud of our new offices and building. We hope to achieve more this year than the year of 1969. Mr. Jacobs moved the Board approve the promotion, seconded by Mr. Howell and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Chief Berry recommended the Board approve the appointment of Billy Watson as regular fireman effective Feb. 1, 1970, Watson having also successfully completed his probationary period. Mr. Howell moved the Board approve the promotion, seconded by Mr. Jacobs and on unanimous voice vote the motion was carried. Page 1-8' Bd. of Public Works 2/5/70 Mr. Howell brought up the problem of the outside doors of the City Building in the Police Department being blown open by the wind, making the Police lobby almost impossible to heat. He Said he thought eventually another set of doors, further out, will have to be installed, at a cost of $2,580.00. The Board took the problem under advisement. Chief Berry reported that he had word yesterday that the FCC was then considering the City ' s request to operate a radio call box system. He expects to hear results momentarily . Chief Berry reported that Fire Chiefs of northern and central Indiana are gathering in Richmond to day and will view the new. fire station. Chief Berry read the following: December 29, 1969 William Berry, Fire Chief 7 North 5th Street Richmond, Indiana_ Dear Sir: On the evening of December. 23rd, several of your fire, com- panies responded to a fire we had in finished goods in our warehouse . These men were under the direction of Roland Walls , Battalion Chief and Duty Chief . Rod Rohe, Assistant Fire Chief was also on the scene . On behalf of Johns-Manville, I would like to commend all of your firemen who were on the scene and particularly Messrs . Walls Wand Rohe for an excellent job not only of extinguishing
